I haven't driven a Miata since we cross-shopped it with our 2001 Z3. My impression at the time was that it sat right down on the road (probably how it gets its handling prowess). The Z3 felt more "sedan-like" in its relationship with the ground, and that felt more comfortable to me. Also, the materials in the Miata were very low-grade as compared to the Z. And the Z--in Topaz, was far more beautiful.
It would probably be worth driving a new higher-line Miata again. But I can't really see buying one of those versus a depreciated Boxster, or even a pre-2007 Z4, or 1-series convertible
