The risk is probably very minimal. but why invite problems?

Everything in the car should be grounded, but there is no real path for excess voltage.

I had to use an air gun for some issues I had with the Volvo transmission control unit and ABS module when I was singling the rear axles. I used my metal air gun, but I attached an alligator clip wire to the nozzle and connected the other end of the wire to the chassis.
