EZ-Pass toll facilities capture both the front plate (if present) and rear plate, along with the transponder ID. The standard toll reader does all that at any legal highway speed. [Well, 75 MPH at least - I'm not sure if they all support the new 80 MPH limit in Texas.] That means you can blow through the Lincoln Tunnel plaza at 75MPH and they'll have read your tag number and license plate(s).
BTW, my imaginary friend Beavis (like Stuka's friend Butthead
) once took apart an EZ-pass transponder and wired it up to go "Breep!" every time it was read. You'd be amazed at the number of places that read these, including regular urban intersections, random streetlight poles, and so on.
