Not saying the fix discussed on the message board you linked didn't work. It just seems fishy.
My Boxster has made a really odd rattling noise, more often in really cold weather, that I've never been able to track down in 60,000 miles of driving. It drives me nuts. I feel your pain.

You can pull the retainer clip off. Or replace the boot. I keep a stock of ball joint boots in my toolbox - I got tired of buying new arms for no reason other than a torn boot.
