E36 quarter panels are stamped with lower wheel openings than the front fenders. I think the purpose of that was to make the wheel-to-fender gaps look the same at the factory 4x4 ride height, which also had a lot of F/R rake. When the car is lowered and the factory rake reduced for improved handling, the rear tires look "tucked."

I really dislike the look of the E36 sedans. Which is weird because I greatly prefer the look of the E46 sedans compared to the coupes.
