I wonder if a weight distributing hitch would have prevented this. Instead of the weight pushing down on the hitch and the rear axle acting as a fulcrum, the downward force would have been moved forward more over the axle itself.

Then again, maybe force at that angle would have been sufficient to rip the hitch off intstead.
