does anyone know of a tracking device to follow my car when I'm not in it ..,

Whenever I bring my car in for service I'm always worried when I leave it over night if anyone is driving it .... Are you aware of any device I can put in my car to track it 24/7 that I can track with my iPhone or computer when I give it to service or even when I leave it overnight in a parking garage in the city.

This might work ... http://thespystore.com/gps-car-tracker-gps4x

Any opinions ?

It looked like you can start and stop the service when you want and only pay while its active. I just skimmed, though, so :dunno:

You could also normally leave it on your kid's car to make sure he's behaving. ;)

Lol ... The way my son goes through brakes and tires something tells me that device would give me more stress tracking him then I already feel ...

I'm frustrated ... Between bmw, Audi and Porsche I am tired of wondering why they put so many miles on my cars when they are in for service

With the Tesla, I can monitor it real time from the Tesal App... Includes a map and driving direction, speed.

I get that you don't want them joyriding or pulling one over on you, but at the end of the day does it really matter? Or to put it another way, is there really anything you can and/or will do about it anyway? Besides, you'll sell the car off soon enough.... ;)

Edit:
Here you go, no monthly fees just some aa batteries.

I was just saying how I'd do it :dunno:

No recommendation whatsoever :D

Garmin sells a GPS tracker aimed at dogs but you can track anything with it.

Edit: Here it is, but it looks discontinued...

You make a good point, the big picture is 'does it really matter', for me I just want to make sure no one is taking the car home with them.

Yeah, find my iphone is a sweet stalking app. :eeps::D

Saves me many texts and calls with my wife. Kids love to track mom as she makes her way home.

I couldn't pry the phone out of their hands if I tried, I think it's attached to them

Meanwhile I was thinking of what device I have that has the find iphone app but they all need wifi to be connected ...

A dash cam that runs with the car might be even better. Than you can actually monitor the driving behavior.

That is a pretty good idea ... I need to look into those but I think I'd be worried someone would see them in the car and try to steal them ... Kind of like leaving radar detector on the windshield ... Some dummy will break a window and try to steal it even in the dealer parking lot.

I had the opposite problem with my last BMW that had the stalling issue. I encouraged them to take the thing home every night for a week so that they could reproduce the issue, but it seems instead that they would just wash it and tell me it's ready for pickup.

Hey, AF - You have an Audi in the family right?

blee 04-21-2016 12:02 PM

Nothing like doing a little nose candy in someone else's car. :O

I'm not fully up to speed on this stuff, but I thought there were several trackers available that were primarily intended for parents to keep track of their kids. Things that plug into OBD ports, for example, to monitor driving parameters along with GPS. I suppose a savvy tech could find one of those easily enough.

ayn 04-26-2016 07:02 PM

I have a Metromile, https://www.metromile.com/technology/

I got it a few years ago and they sent me a OBDII device that has its own cellular data connection. It's free and I can see trips I've made, MPG, est. fuel cost, and when parked on the street I get street cleaning warnings.

I'm not sure if they still give it away for free, they try to sell per-mile insurance and that's how the company makes money.

I've got 2 Audi's right now but that video didn't look too horrible, the guy just kept flooring it ... also I always worry about my manual cars because of the clutch more then the automatics ...

BTW Who is crazy enough to post that video ... do you think that is really an audi mechanic :dunno: I kind of wonder because of the subtitles showing what he was doing.

Meanwhile I like the idea of a cam in the car so that the person driving it knows they are being recorded.

ayn 05-23-2016 07:16 PM

Haha I almost bought my car from Audi Palo Alto.

I think this might be the answer, there don't seem to be any fee's accept for the cost of the actual tracker. I ordered a few of them to try out.

ZBB 07-11-2016 02:06 PM

Only issue with those is that someone else using the Trackr app has to be within 100 feet of the device in order to let it send you the location...

From their site:
Quote:

If an item goes missing, TrackR's Crowd GPS network will help you find it. When another user of the TrackR app comes within 100ft range of your lost item, you will receive a GPS update of where your item is.

From their site:

Arghh I knew I should have gone through and read all the details .... Ok I'll use it for something else I guess :dunno:

Reminder to self ... Never order things while in the office and in business mode

Both the R8 and 911 are going in for service and this thought came to me again, I want a tracker and it seems there are a lot more options but it gets confusing ... any ideas on what I can put in my car to track its location in real time ? Do I need to pay a fee or are there units that don’t make you pay it :dunno:

Google's Privacy Snoop (or whatever cute & cuddly name they try to call it) does pretty-close to real-time tracking of where your phone has been which you cav view later on the phone. Not sure if it is sharable between phones "live". And you have to leave your phone on in the car somewhere.
