About to do something very stupid

Today I will be putting a deposit down on an M3 for European delivery.

It's a disturbingly large amount of money to commit to, but my wife is fully on board and I think I just have to scratch the itch and not be so practical. I figured I've "saved" myself north of $30K by finishing my basement myself, so that's my treat and my early 40th present.

I'd love to think I'll keep this car for a long time but who knows. I'm hoping for at least a ZHP-like 6 years.

Specs:
-Sakhir Oragne
-6MT
-Moonroof
-Executive package (ZEC)
-Black leather (included in ZEC)
-Competition package with black wheels.

Managed to get the best deal out of the local dealer, so that makes things easier and should get me nice loaners if needed.

The plan is to also do PC delivery in the US.

Nice! Congrats. I like the spec.

wdc330i 02-23-2018 12:17 PM

Awesome! And very exciting. Now the first of several excruciating waits begin.

Josh (PA) 02-23-2018 12:23 PM

VERY COOL. Can't wait to hear your thoughts when it is delivered (Both times).

I'm jealous of the Euro and PC delivery opportunities.

Jeff_DML 02-23-2018 12:42 PM

Congrats, jealous of the euro delivery

bren 02-23-2018 12:51 PM

Yeah, that does seem like a pretty dumb idea. :p

wdc330i 02-23-2018 12:54 PM

I'm actually a proponent of buying the last of a model year. My 2006 M3C and 2012 328iT were very good, problem-free cars (for as long as I kept them).

me too, but used so someone else eats the initial depreciation.

I’ve always been that way.

It seems like the first 2 years of a redesign have unforeseen problems. It’s a coming theme among all brands.

That's the best plan. Did that with the M3.

zach 02-23-2018 01:42 PM

Excellent! Can't wait to see it

Nick M3 02-23-2018 01:49 PM

It's not too late to delete the moonroof and switch it to Yas. ;)

equ 02-23-2018 01:51 PM

Congrats, but I'm with Nick on the spec...

rumatt 02-23-2018 01:52 PM

I don't think it's stupid. You've been thinking about one of these for a while.

ED isn't a discount for M cars, right? Or they still come out of allocation so you don't have the bargaining power for a non-m? I forget how it works. But either way, ED is still a special treat. It's just fun somehow, and it adds to the purchase experience.

In terms of used, there's also something to owning a new car. If you can predict when you will keep the car for a long time, and you get a good deal on the initial purchase, it's still worth it IMO.

LOL I will have it welded in place :D

John V 02-23-2018 03:13 PM

Congrats, that will be a nice machine.

FC 02-23-2018 03:54 PM

Thanks guys!

I've agonized over the moonroof thing, but really, I just like having the hole up top. I decided to at least go with leather to minimize the unicorn factor.

The MY2018 M3 seems to not only have benefited from inevitable manufacturing improvements but also suspension and other tweaks on the competition pkg.

I'm banking on a highly memorable family trip experience. I hope that doesn't disappoint.

I do get 5% off on ED, plus the usual haggle for another ~5% off. It will still hurt when I sell it for sure, but it is bound to have low miles and be well taken care of. If I can get someone to get past the sunroof and hold on to it for 6 years+, you never know, it might not be that awful going by late year E90 prices.

Biggins 02-23-2018 04:41 PM

Awesome, enjoy the ED too! It should keep you entertained for years!

I'd assume that the sunroof will increase your sale value in the general population. Just not here.

bren 02-23-2018 05:24 PM

The e90 market doesn't really seem relevant unless they put a 4cyl in the new one - or stop offering the manual transmission. :dunno:

I think that's right, especially since it will be a sedan and not a coupe, it's less likely to be a dilettante hot-rodder choice.

This could well happen.

Plus I just did a search and 2011 E90's with 65k miles and unknown histories are over 30k.

If I end up averaging 6k/year in depreciation after 6 years, I'd be ok with that. Mine is bound to have under 40k miles after 6 years.

It doesn't matter though. It will be what it will be.

Yeah but which M's are not doing well resale wise?

robg 02-23-2018 06:56 PM

Congrats!

ED is always a great experience - you can't go wrong there. You kind of "bond" with the car more as well which makes it more likely you'll keep it for a longer period of time.

As long as you don't find anything highly annoying about it, I think it will easy to keep the car for 5-6 years. Plus, it sounds like this is the car you really want and have wanted for quite a while. Had you decided to "be practical", and get, say, a 340i instead that's where you likely would've regretted your decision and ended up ditching the car early to get the car you really wanted in the first place. I wouldn't worry at all about the sunroof vs no sunroof. Doubt it will make a noticeable difference in resale either way.

This is all true. I think my wife is also on "if I don't let him get this one, I won't stop hearing about it for 10 years!" mode.

...even though I've been quite reasonable and she herself shot down the idea of a GTI or an R instead.:eeps:

Enjoy the ED experience. What does the delivery trip look like?

Doing a bit of a mix of both previous trips with a bit extra. We are taking the kids with us. 2 weeks.

Day 1) BMW factory/museum/car delivery. PM Drive Munich to Salzburg via quick stop at Berchtesgaden (Eagle’s Nest) – 125 miles (3+ hours of driving total)
Day 2) Stay in Salzburg
Day 3) PM Salzburg to Hallstatt – 46 miles (1+ hours of driving)
Day 4) Stay in Hallstatt
Day 5) Early AM Hallstatt to Bolzano (via Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse and the Dolomites) – 261 miles (all day worth of scenic driving).
Day 6) Early AM Bolzano to Lake Como (via Swiz.) – 164 miles (5+ hours of driving)
Day 7) Stay in Lake Como
Day 8) Early AM Lake Como to Interlaken (via Gotthard & Susten passes) – 141 miles (4+ hours of driving)
Day 9) Interlaken to Strassbourg via blackforest (with brief stops along the way) – 211 miles (all day worth of driving)
Day 10) Strassbourg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber (stopping in Stuttgart only to visit MB & Porsche Museums) – 186 miles (3+ hours of driving)
Day 11) Stay in Rothenburg - Have break-in service done – Dealer is 2 miles away. I should be at or over 1200 miles.
Day 12) Rothenberg to Munich via Schwangau – 250 miles (under 4.5 hours total)
Day 13) Return car and fly out.

May ditch Strassbourg in favor of more time in Interlaken so we can visit Jungefrau.

ZBB 02-23-2018 08:28 PM

Nice.

I’d recommend spending more time in Interlachen — beautiful area...
