About to do something very stupid
Today I will be putting a deposit down on an M3 for European delivery.
It's a disturbingly large amount of money to commit to, but my wife is fully on board and I think I just have to scratch the itch and not be so practical. I figured I've "saved" myself north of $30K by finishing my basement myself, so that's my treat and my early 40th present. I'd love to think I'll keep this car for a long time but who knows. I'm hoping for at least a ZHP-like 6 years. Specs: -Sakhir Oragne -6MT -Moonroof -Executive package (ZEC) -Black leather (included in ZEC) -Competition package with black wheels. Managed to get the best deal out of the local dealer, so that makes things easier and should get me nice loaners if needed. The plan is to also do PC delivery in the US. |
Nice! Congrats. I like the spec.

Awesome! And very exciting. Now the first of several excruciating waits begin.
|
VERY COOL. Can't wait to hear your thoughts when it is delivered (Both times).
I'm jealous of the Euro and PC delivery opportunities. |
Congrats, jealous of the euro delivery
|
Yeah, that does seem like a pretty dumb idea. :p
|
I'm actually a proponent of buying the last of a model year. My 2006 M3C and 2012 328iT were very good, problem-free cars (for as long as I kept them).

It seems like the first 2 years of a redesign have unforeseen problems. It’s a coming theme among all brands. |

Excellent! Can't wait to see it

It's not too late to delete the moonroof and switch it to Yas. ;)
|
Congrats, but I'm with Nick on the spec...

I don't think it's stupid. You've been thinking about one of these for a while.
ED isn't a discount for M cars, right? Or they still come out of allocation so you don't have the bargaining power for a non-m? I forget how it works. But either way, ED is still a special treat. It's just fun somehow, and it adds to the purchase experience. In terms of used, there's also something to owning a new car. If you can predict when you will keep the car for a long time, and you get a good deal on the initial purchase, it's still worth it IMO. |

LOL I will have it welded in place :D |
Congrats, that will be a nice machine.

Thanks guys!
I've agonized over the moonroof thing, but really, I just like having the hole up top. I decided to at least go with leather to minimize the unicorn factor. The MY2018 M3 seems to not only have benefited from inevitable manufacturing improvements but also suspension and other tweaks on the competition pkg. I'm banking on a highly memorable family trip experience. I hope that doesn't disappoint. |

Awesome, enjoy the ED too! It should keep you entertained for years!

The e90 market doesn't really seem relevant unless they put a 4cyl in the new one - or stop offering the manual transmission. :dunno:

Plus I just did a search and 2011 E90's with 65k miles and unknown histories are over 30k. If I end up averaging 6k/year in depreciation after 6 years, I'd be ok with that. Mine is bound to have under 40k miles after 6 years. It doesn't matter though. It will be what it will be. |

Congrats!
ED is always a great experience - you can't go wrong there. You kind of "bond" with the car more as well which makes it more likely you'll keep it for a longer period of time. As long as you don't find anything highly annoying about it, I think it will easy to keep the car for 5-6 years. Plus, it sounds like this is the car you really want and have wanted for quite a while. Had you decided to "be practical", and get, say, a 340i instead that's where you likely would've regretted your decision and ended up ditching the car early to get the car you really wanted in the first place. I wouldn't worry at all about the sunroof vs no sunroof. Doubt it will make a noticeable difference in resale either way. |

...even though I've been quite reasonable and she herself shot down the idea of a GTI or an R instead.:eeps: |
Congrats!
Enjoy the ED experience. What does the delivery trip look like? |
