Lucky, or unlucky? Also, recommendations on replacement tire brands?
 

I can only guess at the perfect timing and positioning required for this to happen. Maybe I should play the lottery this weekend?

This is on the Accord, which I may or may not be keeping much longer. I'm sure that I'll make a split-second decision on that while I'm out getting groceries some random day. ;)

The tires are at the end of their life, so I'm going to replace them no matter what I decide. I want to spend for tires in the middle of the $$ pack so that I won't regret and hate them should I decide to keep the car for a few more years. But don't want to over-spend in the event that I trade the car in. I know zero about the "off-brands" that live in my size range. Cooper? Lauffen? Vredestein? Hankook?

Prices on tirerack are all over the map. And there are some decent performance summer choices in the right price range, though that seems like a silly idea on a car that isn't driven hard.

You don't have to choose a tire for me. But if you have general suggestions about brands to look at, or avoid, I'd certainly welcome them.

Hankook and Vredestein are good. General is also good. I currently have Hankooks on the E90 M3 - for my use, they are better than the Michelin options. General makes the best non-extreme tires in E30 15" sizes (they are continental's off brand).

For that Honda, I would probably pick the General Altimax RT43. IMO, it's about 90% of the Continental DWS, but cheap. And it has great wet traction. Supposedly also good snow traction, but I've never tested. I'm about to buy a second set of them to go on the iX.

I didn't go online to look at prices, but the Conti DWS are a really good tire for the $$$.

Interesting. I'm a big fan of Michelins because of the build quality (I've had several excellent experiences with the brand), so that you like your Hankooks better than other options means something. I'll give them a close look.

I'm not. Had issues with audible and physical tire wobble right from the start. One tire also makes a metallic grinding noise that changes frequency with your speed. These are also $272/each right now, which is at the high end of the range of all tires available to me. No thanks.

The sole Hankook in my size is the Ventus S1 evo3, which is an UHP summer tire. It's about $200 less (for 4) than the Michelin MXM4's that I'm also looking at. The car doesn't "need" summer tires, but I'll consider the handling improvement and cost savings as opposed to the shorter tread lifespan.

I now live within a 20 mile radius of 5 of their production plants and their North American headquarters. Heck, I drive by Michelin Blvd 4-5 times a week.

I'd highly recommend calling and talking to someone at Tire Rack. The people that man the phones are not random minimum wage call center order taking people. They're pretty knowledgeable about tires and even if they aren't directly familiar with the tires you're talking about, they sit on a ton of objective and subjective testing data and notes in addition to customer reviews. And they know how to effectively compare it.

As an aside, when you're doing cost comparisons, make sure you account for mounting costs.

I would only consider the V12 Evo for a street tire from Hankook.
