Tires, again.

I feel like I ask this question a lot, but all the threads I could find searching were old.

So, here goes:

Need tires for the Boxster. I'll use them on the street, but only in niceish weather. I'll also use them for DEs. I want them to last fairly well on the track, but also be as grippy as possible.

I've got Yoko AD-08s, which have lasted two years and something like 12 track days, which seems hard to beat.

The other option is the Potenza RE-11, which are on sale and $200 cheaper for the set.

PSSs are supposed to be great, but the shoulder wear on those is worse than the Yokos, at least from anecdotal experience.

Any others worth considering?

EDIT: Looks like the PSSs are $200 cheaper than the Yokos, too. That might make my decision for me.

Can't help ya -- I managed to get the Boxster sold without changing the tires (or taking a hit for low tread depth by Carmax -- the guy happened to measure the tread depth on the one tire I had to replace due to running over a paint scraper a couple years ago)...

I have PSS's on the 997TT and I love them, but I can't speak to wear.

Just remember to get N-rated tires.

From what I have read I would buy PSS.

If rain and comfort are not a concern, I would go with the Yokos. If they are, PSS.

Do not get the RE11. It's old tech and has been replaced by the RE11A.

I vote PSS.

That's what I've ordered.

A decision in less than 2 hours? Ban him!

:D

Well, let's be honest, PSS was the clear front runner, though I respect the decision to throw it up one more time and making sure it still sticks.

I just read about the ad08R.... Too late to change my mind?

It's always curious to me that the PSS tires are so well liked, while I was so thoroughly unimpressed with them, at least compared to the RE-050. It must make a large difference which car you have them on.

JST 07-11-2013 07:57 PM

AD 08R looks impressive, but Tirerack is showing it to be only available in 245 40 18; fine for the fronts, but no rear fitment.

Is there another source you use?

Or you have extremely poor taste.

I like the RE050A's on the 328iT. I liked the RE040's in the ZHP as well. But the PS2's (ZHP and V70R) and PSS's (997TT) are grippier and more comfortable (a bit quieter perhaps - though that is likely because they replaced older tires) and seem slightly better on the wet.

I recall the PS2's not being quite that sharp on initial turn-ins, but I the PSS's seem better.

Nope. Easier decision then.

I really dig the new PSS that my e46 m3 had the grace to come with. The sidewalls feel stronger than PS2's, the grip better and the ride quieter. The ride is firm, but that's partly XL-rating and suspension related. They suck badly in the cold, the potenza re050 is much better in that aspect while being much worse at everything else. I can't comment on track use, but for the street, I'd buy'em.

The Pilot Sport A/S 3 appears to be receiving very positive reviews. There is a possibility they may replace the RE050A run-flats on the E90.

Do you need a/s in the south?

I am not deep south. SE, only 30 mins from the Great Smoky Mtns. The weather in Knoxville is like Sybil, you never know what you are going to get. This year has been nuts... very little Spring, not all that hot of a summer, but tons of rain (TVA is currently releasing most of their dams). My grass has never been this green in July, it is usually brown. We had a very mild winter, but the prior year it was fairly cold with plenty of snow.

PSS were my choice until I read your post how they suck in the cold.

I am not thrilled with the RE050As on the wagon. Wet grip seems sorely lacking.
