Okay, so I went and bought a Tesla

After seeing the Model 3 in person I realized I do not want that car, at least not in its current incarnation. Worse, when you option it up as one would reasonably and typically option it, it's $56K. Sure, that's still 3-series territory, but...

So I started looking at the pre-owned Teslas listed at the Tesla site. And I went in for another test drive. I learned of the much more extensive inventory they do not list (and you can't search) on the public site. Searching with the Tesla staff, we came up with a car very much in line with what I was looking for option-wise with low miles and at a price below that of the (realistic) Model 3.

So I bought it.

It had to catch a ride down from Connecticut, but they didn't charge for that. And they did a fabulous job making the car look completely brand new. Throw in an extended warranty that'll cover me through a reasonable 3-4 year ownership experience and I'm pretty happy with the deal.

As with every Model S I've driven, it's huge. And silly quick. And eerily quiet. But with a long commute, chargers at the office, and the ability to use HOV in Maryland with just one person because it's an EV, it feels like a good call. I figure I'm spending almost $50/week on gas in the E39 (plus it's ancient) so that's $200/mo in gas savings even before they raise the gas tax.

So, vitals...

It's a 2014 Model S 85 (not P or D), upgraded rims, sunroof, tech package, arctic weather package, and some other options (pic of sticker reprint is below).

Arctic weather package is nice to have. For some reason your pics aren't showing up in my browser, though I can see the links in the code.

The only pic that is here that is not on FB is the sticker.

Refresh as I wrote the text on my MBP but then went to my phone to edit the post to add the pics. So it was briefly pic-less.

equ 02-15-2018 10:15 PM

Congrats!

wdc330i 02-15-2018 10:17 PM

Really nice.

What are you winnowing from the fleet?

dan 02-15-2018 10:30 PM

Hey, cool

TD 02-15-2018 10:30 PM

The E39 is going to get parked at my mom's and we're selling the M3.

Ah, yes. There they are.

That's a nice spec. Very similar to my first car.

Did you get a HPWC installed at your house?

EDIT:

Also, what's your rated range look like when the car is fully charged? Curious about where your battery sits in terms of degradation.

I thought that was only useful for dual chargers?

The wall charger install is scheduled for next week.

I can make it until then charging with the wall outlet.

Cool. Are you doing a 50 amp circuit, or bigger in case you get something else in the future?

I did a 100 amp circuit even though my first car only had the single 40 amp charger, and am sort of glad I did--my current car has dual chargers and it's pretty cool to be able to jam 80 amps in when I have to.

Actually now that I say that I guess there are new thresholds for the HPWCs. 72 is the new max?

Wow. Congratulations!

Congrats! Looks very nice in silver. still huge, but silver works well with the model S

John V 02-16-2018 08:46 AM

Congrats!

And the answer to your question is "Because Tapatalk sucks." You have an iPhone. It does the internet by itself

I realized looking at these pics that I've now become used to the new front-end design. Still can't decide which is better though.

The old ones look like they are birthing an egg, the new ones look like someone sewed their mouths shut.

This site works just fine on my phone? :dunno:

Josh (PA) 02-16-2018 11:06 AM

Wow Congrats, that sounds like a great move. I'm curious to see how well you do on the M3 too. I wonder if you can turn a profit on it.

Having seen a number of model 3s in the flesh this week in LA, I can also say your gen Model S is far and away the best looking thing Tesla has made. In person the 3 is worse than in the pics (where it is horrendous)

rumatt 02-16-2018 11:12 AM

I'm curious to hear your long-term review / reviews.

Definitely follow up in this thread over time as you figure out how you feel about EV's.

lip277 02-16-2018 11:14 AM

And... what are you calling 'ancient'?

I think the only exterior aesthetic irritant I see in the S is that the wheels/tires are narrower than the front and rear wheel haunches demand they be. Other than that, these days it symbolically reminds me of the original Taurus. It's just not evocative.

I can't see a 3, even from the rear, without seeing Keanu Reeves with no mouth.

I'm sure I'd have tons of fun with one and I'm sure TD will, too.

Must be a 2015 with the 9/14 date of manufacture that I can read off the sticker.

Is it RWD or AWD?

The Ds were introduced around then, but I don't think the model year changeover happened until Jan. 1, did it? I'm hazy on the details.

In any event, this one is just an 85, which they still made for a while after the Ds were introduced (in fact, IIRC the non-P AWD cars didn't hit the road until early 2015). Which is the very long way of saying it's RWD. Produced about 14,000 cars after mine.

I think we had the model year vs running change discussion in *the* Tesla thread.

equ 02-16-2018 03:28 PM

D = AWD? I haven't read through the lengthy S thread.

I'm stoked for TD. A worthy follower to the e39. There are not that many interesting daily driver (we're not talking bonkers v8's and v10's here) sedans in the 15-years that separate them.

robg 02-16-2018 04:06 PM

Congrats. I know you've been wanting a tesla for several years now.

Tesla uses calendar year, not the traditional sept model year change...

Yeah, sorry. D = AWD. D for "dual motor."

The timeline went roughly like this:

60, 85, and P85 were the first cars launched. All were RWD with a single drive motor in between the rear wheels. The 60s had 300ish hp, the 85s had 360, and the P85s had 416.

In autumn of 2014, Tesla introduced the first autopilot gear. Shortly thereafter, it also announced the dual motor cars. The P85D was the first to launch, with a smaller motor up front and the larger P85 drive unit in the back.* The "normal" D cars followed quickly thereafter, and those all had two of the smaller drive units, one in front and one in back.

There then ensued a bunch of fuckery with pack sizes that I can't keep straight, with the "big" pack going to 90 and the small pack to 70 and then to 75 when the Model X launched, IIRC.

But I believe TD's is one of the last OG Teslas without any autopilot features.

*There are a few autopilot equipped RWD P85s out there, but there aren't many of them.

TD 02-16-2018 07:26 PM

I'm no fan of either the old or new Model S nose either. But it wasn't a deal-breaker.

And, yeah, the tires could be wider and less efficiency-oriented. Maybe once I burn through them...

TD 02-16-2018 07:26 PM

JST- Do you have the center console? I'm considering it.
