Boxster S to get Cayman S engine in 2007

Word reaches us that Porsche is working on a new 3.4-litre flat-six engine for the Boxster, and which will be available in the UK in late summer. Presumably a Cayman S unit in a lower tune, this plus strong rumors of a new 2.8-3.0 litre engine suggests that the whole Boxster range is being bumped up in power. 'Porsche are keeping that one very quiet because they are still producing the 3.2,' a source says.

I say they put the exact engine as the Cayman S and bump up the price to Cayman S levels. It makes no sens eto de-tune the 3.4L further. It already puts out only 15hp more than the 3.2L and is supposedly good for 325hp. Of course, they could just be giving themesleves headroom for future power bumps.

now that i've seen the Cayman S on the road and now that i've come to understand Porsche's glass ceiling philosophy about the car, i'd guy the Boxster S with my own money.

and i don't even like convertibles.

Put the GT3 engine in the Cayman already and make a Cayman RS.


I'd take that over a Z06.

With a limited slip.

Not for what they'd end up charging for it, you wouldn't.

two points to make:

1. i am a neanderthal. 7 litres appeals to me in a beavis and butthead kind of way.

2. punching the throttle early on a saturday morning on the highway and going from 60 to 120.........in 5th gear like a rocketship --there is no sensation short of jet fighters on afterburn like that. so, unless the cayman S ever had that or ever will, i've got zero interest, just to be honest.

since owning an m3, i've learned the appeal of finesse and handling, but i still very much require that pure speed.

Definitely not sustained triple digits, no. And you need a Z06 to get there and back quickly enough without running out of real estate or running into others. In the near-metro areas, that is.

I still think my 330i is plenty fast. It could be a tad faster and it could sure use more low-end grunt. But I tell you, the 987S is perfect as far as what I consider to be a good powerband. More than power or torque, the most pressing need in my 330i is an LSD.

hey aty: you do that sort of thing very lightly and with fantastic amounts of diligence.

hey aty-2: notice i said 5th gear. a lot of cars could do that in 3rd or 4th gear with some shifting, but in 5th gear. ;)
