I've got a bit of a struggle ...

Like the title says I've got a bit of a struggle here ... I seem to be obsessed with this car ... I am going to see it in person which I don't normally do unless I really want the car. I don't want to get rid of my 911 which has only 12k miles on it and I don't want to get rid of the R8 which has 15k miles on it ...

There is no way I can have another car for myself it is just not right and my driveway is currently packed (we have 7 cars now and that isn't including the RX8 which BTW I am not keeping).

These cars depreciate like rocks which makes it a bargain being used and just look at it

Argghh ... why did I actually look up these cars online :irate: I've got to sit in it and see if I am comfortable and I have to take it for a quick spin ... maybe I'll hate it :dunno:

Dude, it's white. Can't you wait for a real color?

JST 08-03-2017 07:11 PM

That's what wraps are for.

I'd ditch the R8 for one of these in a heartbeat.

Clyde you know me ... I only like cars that are Black or White ... I also like bright red but that's about it.

Currently we have 6 black cars and 1 white one.

FWIW, my son got to sit at one last year and loved it. I think they're cool, but not sure I'd take one over an R8. If you can swap the R8 and/or the 911 for it without too much of a financial hit, I'd say do it. You love cars. Part of the fun of cars, is trading them in for something different and gaining the experience.

Car rag reviews suggest they're very livable.

I just showed my son a picture of this car and your R8. He said the McLaren is much cooler, but you should really get it in orange.

I love this kid and I never met him ...he has good taste though I cannot go that extreme with an orange color ... tell him people would laugh at an old man like me getting an orange car :)

Josh (PA) 08-04-2017 07:50 AM

Clyde, you and he may be kindred spirits. He also loves Camaros... as long as they have racing stripes.

The only "right" color for this car is orange.

There's a guy John V knows (I kinda know him, but not really) that bought one in early 2016 (I think) and did One Lap in it and has tracked it a bunch. I think he likes it, but it does not seem to be what you might call, um, trouble free.

Thanks for the link I am gonna check it out ... the thing for me is I don't encounter a lot of problems with my cars being I only put on annually about 10k miles year and when you divide that between the 3 cars with the main car (my Awd sedan) getting about 6k of those miles these cars get driven but hopefully not enough to get into the issues people who daily drive them get but you never know :dunno:

As far as Orange... that is not a color for me, neither is green, yellow and pretty much any other color other than black, white or red ... I like some blues too but that is about it.

Well now that you mention it ... orange is pretty hot :D:D

LMAO !!!

Plaz 08-04-2017 11:40 PM

When I ordered the 1M, it was black, white, or orange I had to decide between.

I think if I had still been in California, I would have ordered orange. But on the east coast black is better. Not exactly sure why, but it just is. I hate white, but it's NYC area appropriate. Counter-intuitively easier to keep semi-clean looking.

But my auto-colorist bigotry notwithstanding, that white McLaren is goddamned sexy.

I too would swap an R8 for that without hesitation. (He says having never driven either)

What's your 991 trim again, C2S w/PDK? Cabrio?

My Porsche is a 2012.5 C2S Coupe with a 7 speed manual (991.1) black/black, I custom ordered it to my specs and it was the first batch of manual's to hit the USA and literally the first one to hit my dealership because back then they first introduced the 991 with pdk and 1/2 a yr later they finally introduced the manual. I remember telling my salesman to make sure no one was to touch my car when it arrrived because knowing it was the first 7 speed manual to hit the dealership I was super paranoid they would want to drive it.

The wait for the manual felt like it took forever but was well worth it.

rumatt 08-05-2017 12:47 AM

Dude that sounds fun as hell.

Why not do it? What's holding you back?

equ 08-05-2017 09:51 AM

The thing with Porsches is that they are so comfortable and so damned usable as a daily, especially the 981/991 generations. I remember salivating at the specs of your 991S. If you get the McL but then end up not being able to use it due to width, clearance, visibliity, too much value, defroster, who knows what, then you'll miss the 991. If you can swing it, replace the R8 with it - if you want it that badly - but keep the 911.

JST 08-05-2017 10:06 AM

I saw a McLaren today at Cars and Coffee. They are pretty impressive in person.

Josh (PA) 08-05-2017 11:25 AM

This one is much cooler:

Definitely agree with Equ. ... the R8 would be the one I get rid of. I love the 911 too much to get rid of it though I do wish it were a more exotic looking car.

Anyway the McClaren is not at the selling dealer which is not a good thing iMO ... it is at McClaren getting service. The good news is the salesman said it does have a warranty though I don't know the details.

UPDATE: As of today ... the McClaren is still at the McClaren dealer ... this isn't looking to hopeful

Why not hopeful?

They had the car for a while, why now is it getting service since last week if the car is just basically sitting in a warehouse plus I'm concerned with reliability as it is being it is a such a small car brand.

EDIT: The salesman just sent me a text the Battery was dead, after reading about these cars I found the battery can cost anywhere from $2500 to $3500.

Not as much less as it should.

The McLaren must use special, ultra-grade electricity.

Yeah, Andy loves that car, but for everything that has gone wrong with it I don't see it being worth the pain. It sounds like a car built in the UK and made of Chinese components. :D

They are pretty, I guess... I can't put my finger on why but I find the styling to be a little derivative.

JST 08-09-2017 07:30 AM

I will say, the one time I saw a McLaren at a track, it looked great and was super quick...until it barfed oil all over the infield and left on a flatbed.

It's a lithium battery and is supposed to be light weight, I know nothing about batteries and thought the last one I purchased was expensive at $600 for my BMW 650. The McClaren one is insane

ff 08-09-2017 09:27 AM

$600 seems insane, too. I had a run of replacements a few years back when my now-ex-wife kept killing batteries by running the A/C with the engine turned off. The most expensive one was an Optima for the S2000, at right around $200. And I thought that price was extreme.

equ 08-09-2017 09:31 AM

I got a pretty high quality Bosch for the e46 M3 in the last two years. It was sub-$150 (with credit figured in from the last battery that didn't go as long as it should). Also no dealer fees or coding. Yay for old cars!

Not to threadjack, but seems appropriate timing to share this part of my past 24 hours in Florida...

Alan 08-18-2017 08:36 PM

Ok frustrating end to this thread ... i've been contacting the salesman on a regular basis .. yesterday after checking in to see if the car is finally back at the dealer I get a text it's not yet ready and then a text later that day the manager sold the car while still at the McClaren dealer .... I checked the McClaren dealers website and it's not listed on there website but it was a big disappointment.

I just don't get it ... not that I'm actively looking for a car, I just happen to see this one and wanted to get into it a little further .. something felt right meanwhile I still don't want to get rid of the R8 or the 911 :dunno::ack:

Sheesh I don't even want to car shop but damn that car looked so good :irate:

Yes. They're outnumbered and tough to find, though.

John V 08-19-2017 07:30 AM

I don't know who Jon Shafer is but the salesman who sold us our CX-5 was awesome.
