Debating about getting rid of the 28-300 as well. |
What do you want for the body? Wait don’t tell me. Wait what do you want? No, I don’t want to know.
Don’t be sums clyde. Even if it will help someone good, don’t be dumb. |

The D810 is great and a really solid improvement over the D800. If I were Kevin, who has all my old equipment , I'd sell the D800 and keep the D700 and the D810.
There is still something special about the D700. Just a no-nonsense solid camera with lovely color rendering. I should have kept it, but it would have put a dent in my serial acquisition plans. I'm interested in the D850 especially for the articulated screen (which I have on my D500)--and all the other D500-like advances. I do some "studio" work for the magazine that has me standing on my head to compose with the fixed screen. One thing I will miss about the D810 is the ability to use it as a master controller for multiple flash units. D850 has no built-in flash, but consequently better weather sealing. Obviously, I've been reading too much about these cameras. |

But I do miss having the on-camera pop up. Built in. Nice to add a little fill when needed. No extra gear to carry, batteries to charge, etc. |

The smallest flash unit I have doesn't require batteries, but it's really only adequate on the 5500. (The D5500 also has its own pop up flash.) It's a very decent little camera, and my go-to when I want to travel light. I pair it with the 16-80 2.8-4 DX lens and it does quite well. Edit: the little speed light (SB-300) does take batteries. Just never seems to go through them. |

That’s a smoking great price! After the roof, with a new computer needed and a new Camaro in the near future, don’t think I can do it, but sorely tempted. |
Ugh about the new roof. Unfun money.
With the D500 and D5500, the burden was lessened on the D810. Hence the low shuuter count. Also, we moved from a beautiful place to a less beautiful place...:( |

Tempted - but...
Not this time - at least not now. Another Mudgeon needs to step up this time. For me - getting two cars in about a month (Escalade and E23) plus the saga with the E9 - I think I'll be eating Top Ramen for a while. Ok - maybe not that bad, but the E9 is getting much more involved than I expected - will fill everyone in soon. That being said - The two previous cameras I got from WDC have been awesome and exactly as described. Would here if I could... but - can't this time. |
You have two very nice cameras as it is! And thank you for the vouch!

BTW: Sold to the local camera store.
KEH is local, too. They offered a substantial amount less for the D810 than the local camera store did--apparently KEH is flooded with D810 bodies. But, I did sell them my 17-35 2.8 for a decent price. |

I have the AF 300/4 and the AF-S 300/4. Love the handling of the former, but it's almost useless by hit rate (and by that, I mean that I get about equal outcomes with MF vs. AF). The latter is just too big and heavy. (Not longer, but much, much thicker and it weighs a lot more.) If only the D850 was cheaper. I want more megapixels than the D500 can offer. It bothers me to not have a meaningful pixel "premium" vs. the 5K iMac. |
Quote:
The D850 margin for focus is pretty razor thin, so I'm not sure your hit rate would improve much with the 300 lenses...But it's decently fast with and without the grip to provide more opportunities for focus. Maybe Clyde needs to move this up to the photo forum... |
