Ford and Tesla
 

Ford’s decision to give its customers access to the Tesla charging network and (more importantly) adopt the Tesla charge port standard is a BFD. Hard to overstate how big, actually; it will be an enormous competitive advantage for them and will prompt GM (and everyone else) to either get on board also or to get serious about funding a rival network.

This is huge. I like that Ford is doing both an adapter for current gen and building in the Tesla connector on new product starting in ‘25.

Makes you wonder if there will also be some blue-oval branded Superchargers down the line?

This does seem like big deal. Consistently reliable charger network seems to be one of the biggest issues with non-Tesla EVs and this eliminates that issue completely.

It’s fantastic. If Ford can get their QC under control, they will be a winner here.

This is an area that calls for regulation. Pick a standard and mandate it.

It’s really not; there’s no need for a mandate, especially given that CCS and the Tesla standard are largely compatible with adapters.

If I had to guess, I’d think the Tesla standard might now eventually win out—but this move by Ford might trigger investment in a competitive network, which would be all to the good.

I know literally nothing about EV charging other than what level 1 vs level 2 means.

Are CCS and whatever Tesla calls theirs the two dominant & competing options in US or are there others?

I think I read at some point that Europe has a common standard - is that true?

Would it be acceptable to require a gas pump dongle? I think not.

At this point, CCS and Tesla (or “NACS”, as they’ve dubbed it) are the two biggest Level 3 fast charging options. There is a third, called Chademo, that was originally favored by the Japanese companies but has largely gone away.

In the EU, there is a common plug mandate. But the EU mandates a lot of things.

As for a gas station dongle…I mean, it would be mildly irritating but it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I’ve used an adapter for the Tesla for Level 2 charging for 10 years and it’s fine.
