718 Cayman GT4

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a2...OHs78mYB_CQ3v4

Now with 4.0L, 414 hp flat six.

Speaking of Porsche killing resale values, this should take the piss out of some of those people selling prior gen GT4s for 100 large.

Yeah sounds like it has a proper gt engine now:cool:

This is the sort of car that could coax me out of my auto enthusiast funk.

I mean, that's awesome, and I want one, but $100k means it's the stuff of dreams and nothing more.

Yes, and not surprising.

Happily I sold my GT4 for exactly $100k. Unhappily, it was a six month distraction, made me miss the perfect 981S Cayman (I got the dealer call for an allocation on the same day I was on the phone with the rennlist seller). Another six months and I ended up with a great Boxster.

I still think the 3.4 (either as S or GTS) is sufficient for the street. The grip and handling are a bit more fun as well. 245/295 with Pilot Cups mean I'm nowhere near the edge of traction in good conditions when the tires are warm. In all other conditions, they are more surprising and have less warning. That and the super low front meant that the car was less fun to drive in real world conditions than regular non-GT porsches despite the increased the torque.

Do the 3.4's feel all that fast? Not terribly. Tempting to try some tunes and upgrades, but I'm not willing to drop cats and swap headers.

Just like I'm guessing most everything feels mortal and slow when you're coming from powerful, instant EV's. Same is true coming from the Ducati 150hp that does a sub 3 second 0 to 60, or 10 second quarter mile. In the real world, if I give it a good dollop not even WOT for a few seconds, I'm in triple digits. Simply too much...

I knew this would happen and I mentioned it in an earlier post. But to JV's point, $100k to start? Way too rich for me to ever consider.

Even 981 Spyders are going for $80k+. What I really would like is a nice 981 GTS, but those are $60k+ and still ~4 years old.

It's crazy.

By all accounts my NC is slow, but it is crazy fun. The more time goes by the more I feel a Miata is the best, most rational toy car for my use case at least until kids are in college. That's 8 years away. I would like to test drive a new ND. I may do that this summer.

The new 718 Spyder takes the 992-generation 911’s 3.0-liter flat-six 9A2EVO engine, bores and strokes it out to 4.0-liters, and strips off the turbos. To get this kind of rev range, new heads, valves, pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft were also fitted. So was a new intake manifold with two resonance flaps. Altogether, this engine makes 414 horsepower at 7600 rpm—39 more than the 2016 Boxster Spyder—and 309 pound-feet of torque from 5000–6800 rpm, identical to the 2016 car.

that it interesting, other article I read assumed it was a detuned GT3 engine

Yes, it's apparently not dry sump because there's nowhere to put the oil tank. I haven't been paying enough attention to know whether oil starvation is still an issue on the track.

That said, yeah, since the GT3 is necessarily 2 seats, I am not sure why you'd buy one of those over a GT4. Maybe testing will reveal that the GT4 is still slower than the GT3, but I have to imagine that the difference disappears on the track, where the GT4's favorable layout provides dividends.

I agree with equ, though--as much as I kind of want this and/or a GT3 Touring, both are overkill for the street.
