Ah, I don't use Android. In my experience the equivalent Apple CarPlay thing is dodgy and annoying. It's nice when it works, but it doesn't work more often than it does. Maybe Android is better?

The Tesla software is world's better than any other OEM nav I've used--night and day. Its traffic integration is solid, too--good enough that I don't even bother with Waze, though I recognize others may like Waze a lot more than I do.

rumatt 08-13-2018 12:03 PM

I saw several threads bitching about Tesla map routing, so that doesn't jive with your experiences. But I'm confident that if it is deficient it will continue to improve. So I'm not worried about it at all.

But Waze warns me about cops. It's that simple. It saved me just this morning.

Waze tells you where the cops are. Ironically also works the other way:

Tesla map routing was weird and bad for a while--like, very terrible, in that it would sometimes route you off on random side trips for no apparent reason. Over the past couple of years it has steadily improved; these days the routes it proposes are basically indistinguishable from the ones that Google suggests, at least around here.

kognito 08-13-2018 03:58 PM

Rumatt, this the one you test drove?

Hahaha. No.

And I just ordered:
- Performance AWD version
- Blue exterior
- Black interior

I skipped
- 20" wheel upgrade
- Nav
- White interior

The web site says Oct - Dec 18

The lead sales guy at the place I ordered it says he's confident I'll get it some time between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Now.... Who's buying my Porsche?

JST 08-13-2018 05:45 PM

Nice!!

equ 08-13-2018 06:26 PM

Good stuff!

equ 08-13-2018 06:33 PM

Can you get ventilated seats? Having chanced on to them with the 981 and the Jeep, I must say they are quite nice to have in these sticky months. Going forward, I'd like to see them on a 5-series level car or above.

Congrats!

rumatt 08-13-2018 06:46 PM

No ventilated seats, unfortunately. I also don't think the seats are particularly special. They're not bad, but they're not great either

ZBB 08-13-2018 09:35 PM

Congrats!

I’m in the same delivery window. Let’s see who gets theirs first.

Regarding Waze... Tesla did a major update of its nav guidance earlier this year and it’s really good. It takes road closures and accidents into account (the older one only took traffic speed, but would route you through closed roads). I find it works well compared to Waze...

Josh (PA) 08-13-2018 09:35 PM

wow, congrats. This will replace the Porsche? Or the BMW? Or both?

Thanks! It's replacing the Porsche only.

If after a year I find the BMW never gets driven I'll have to think about whether it makes sense to keep it. But I don't see that happening.

ZBB 08-13-2018 10:55 PM

So.. I had a voicemail and email from Tesla this evening. From the delivery advisor.

I’ll call them back tomorrow.

Whoa! Just saw this.

Do you have a delivery date already???

John V 08-14-2018 01:41 PM

I'm kinda jealous. I really would like an electric car but need the prices for these to come down to reality first.

Even less of a reality with the tax credits drying up.

I'm pretty sure the prices will only come down, especially once the tax credit disappears.

I view this as me buying an insanely overpriced car just for the fun of being an early adopter.

Almost. I have a VIN and ETA for the car to arrive is Sat Aug 25. Earliest delivery will be the 26th, or any time that following week, assuming the car arrives that day (there have been some reports of 1-2 day shipping delays).

Interested in a lightly used 2013 Model S by chance? It’s now for sale :D

Just over 92k miles, extended warranty is transferable for $100 (gives full coverage up to 100k miles with a $200 per visit deductible, which Tesla has never collected for the handful of repairs done), and the battery and Powertrain are warranted up to 8 years (about 2.75 remaining) or 125k miles.

John V 08-14-2018 07:09 PM

No interest in a Model S. I just don't like the way they drive.

Starting to seriously think about a Volt for my wife. Easily had new in mid $20s right now and it's a great match for her use case.

rumatt 08-14-2018 07:49 PM

Mid 20's minus 7.5k?

Before tax credits. Haven't looked that close, but rebates and incentives appear...not insignificant.

Shit, even Gen 2 Volts (2016+) on Carmax are mid/high $20s.

For reference, the cheapest 2016+ turbo Camaro Carmax has listed is $1100 more than I paid for my new 2017 in February.

It is a big car.

I went from the Boxster to the S. Took a while to get used to the extra acreage behind me :D

I'm pleasantly surprised.

There were rumors of a huge batch of Dual Motors being produced in the last week or so.

The VIN is about 7k lower than others that have been assigned, so it's plausible it was in that batch. I'm glad it was produced earlier in the quarter. Just too many horror stories of Tesla rushing production to meet end of quarter deliveries -- and people having quality issues. Evidence is anecdotal, but a lot of the problems reported just after delivery on both the S and X are cars delivered in the last week or so of a quarter...

It's not the size so much as just how bland and non-sporting the driving experience is.

rumatt 08-16-2018 11:26 AM

This is what my blue 3 will look like with 18's once the stupid wheel covers are removed. I still don't love them, but they're not terrible, and they're nice and light. The covers supposedly add 10% to your range, so I'll keep them around in case I want them for long trips.

I'm undecided whether I will upgrade to 19's and use the stock 18's for winter. But the car will be delivered in fall so I can make that decision in the spring.

What I do know is that the handling on the all seasons was pretty mushy and unsatisfying. This has me worried about winter tires. I'm thinking of sticking with all seasons on the Tesla through winter for a semi-sporty ride and put snows on the truck for bad storms.

I think the 18s look fine, but then I'm not a wheel fanatic.

rumatt 08-16-2018 11:59 AM

Yeah, I agree. I was never excited about huge wheels wrapped in rubber bands.

But I might have to try them with performance tires before deciding. The turn in with all-seasons was shit.

Are you sure it's the tires? Have you driven a 3 with good tires? Because that was one of my biggest turn-offs after driving a Model S... super unresponsive to steering inputs, very numb, and completely lacking in any driving enjoyment. I thought the 3 was supposed to largely fix that.
