Has anyone changed over to their winter tires warm winter

Just curious I keep putting off changing the summer wheels on the 911 to the winter wheels ... it’s already January and the winter has been really mild ... to change them now when in 3 months I’ll be changing right back seems like I’m wasting time. I think I can get through this winter without the change.

Has anyone changed over to their winter set up besides FC who I know changed them out already ?

I changed out the 535i and the Boxster to winters a week after the memorable November storm. I really like how the porsche drives with michelin pilot alpins. Even on clean, dry pavement or on cold rain, it's so much better than summers. I'd never used winters on a porsche before (and I put very few miles on it over the winter), but it was still worth the effort.

I changed out C's vw gti just before going overseas for two weeks so she doesn't get stuck in anything. I guess her blizzaks may be suffering a bit.

I haven't swapped the Macan yet, but plan to upon my return.

I've swapped a set of wheels while waiting for my family to get ready to go out to dinner. An impact gun helps a lot, but they're not rare or odd tools to have if you have any tools at all.

But to answer the question, I'd swap wheels today if I had a set with winter tires. Summer tires are not good below 45º even when dry. Winter tires may be a little squishy, but at freezing and below, they're much better than summer tires.

I swapped the Colorado and Tesla over already.. the day *after* the first storm. So far, totally pointless.

And I'm realizing for the tesla it would have been smarter to go with all seasons. I care more about range than snow performance.

What’s a winter tire :dunno:

zach 01-07-2019 06:15 AM

Yup. Hakkas went on the X5 in October.

FC 01-07-2019 09:09 AM

I changed over to winter tires pretty late (various times in December for the three cars that have winters). The eGolf and LR4 run all-seasons so that allowed me to wait.

One the few unseasonably warm days I used the eGolf. I'm putting all the miles I can on that before it goes back in a month.

Not even a flurry yet in Atlanta. All seasons are a permanent fixture on the 2 and the X. Porsche stays in the garage on bad days, which--given the rainy weather and temps in the low-50s and 40s--means most of the winter so far.

I haven't been able to find an all season tire to fit the Porsche (it has 19-inch rims and staggered tires), otherwise we would swap out the summers. All I see available is a snow, which we don't need to do.

I haven't switched over yet. I'm still on the Conti DW on the Mazdaspeed. They do so well in even cold, slushy temps that it's not worth swapping over to the real winter tires until there's a serious threat of ice or deep snow. The Boxster has mostly been parked for the last couple months.

We seem to usually get our first ice / snow storm in mid to late January so that's when I typically swap... then swap back in mid-March.

Snow? I don't see that for ATL...

No snow here but it's been raining A LOT!! Finally. A little to late for a lot of folks around here but never the less needed.

Tahoe here I come! In my friends Jeep though. =)

It looks like we are getting 3-5" on Sunday. Just in time for the Chargers game.

well, flurries in the mountains

ZBB 01-07-2019 05:40 PM

Haven't changed yet (but my car is still in the body shop).

Even when I get it back, no plans to change tires. Will see how AWD does. And I was fine last winter on all seasons with the Model S (RWD)...

Tonight they are saying 2-5 inches in NC mountains, .5 to 1.5 for us, then changing to frozen stuff then rain

Probably will get a dusting then a lot of rain

zach 01-08-2019 07:01 AM

We hit some flurries on the mass pike in central / western MA over the weekend and it got pretty slippery. As always, overconfident amateur-hour SUV drivers were having some trouble. I was pretty happy to have the Hakkas on the X5.

I changed over the day before our first (only?) snowstorm, around thanksgiving.

It's good, my PSSs would be getting shredded in the cold and I like the SottoZeros even in the dry

John V 01-11-2019 08:06 AM

I'm mounting up the new winter tires to the wheels today and taking them down the street to get balanced. They're going on the Mazdaspeed tonight. I haven't checked the forecast in a few days but we were supposed to get a couple inches over the weekend.

I continue to be amazed at just how good the Conti DW is in cold (25F heading to work the last couple days).

I found stress cracks on the front pair of MPSS's off the 535i. My guess is that they are from use in cold temperatures. And similarly I like the Alpins or other performance winter tires in any case.

It's a long story but I managed to get 50% off my next set of michelins (even the rears). I had a choice and went with the all-season pilots for the first time in more than a decade. I don't drive the 535i super hard. I guess it'll stay a bit floaty rather than responsive but float is what that car does anyway. I don't like the idea that i need to worry about temperatures. Also the PS4's were more $$$ in those 245/40/19 and 275/35/19 sizes.
