I just happen to have a Macan as a loaner and while it is a 4 cylinder turbo and nothing near the car Equ has I have to say I really am enjoying this car. It Is really comfortable and fun to drive .. it’s a little tough to describe but basically if the damn hvac vent didn’t hit the back of the steering wheel instead of my face and the interior wasn’t as familiar as the Porsche I had for the last 6+ years this car would be in my driveway though this model as well as the ‘S’ has this weird delay when needing power.

With that said an S model or above can easily live very happily in the AF household.

You've hit the nail on the head with the HVAC vent right behind the steering wheel. I don't need air blowing right on my face but I do need a phone 'hanging' on a vent visible. This works in every single car except the Macan its steering wheel blocks viewing my phone for Waze or google traffic. (I use and recommend Kenu for clipping to a vent).

I had a loaded sport edition ($68k msrp) 4-cyl as a 200mi loaner. It's peppy enough around town and holds 85-90 on the highway, gets the job done. But it and the macanurbo are very very different cars. There is no special feel at all to the 4-cyl when it's same competent engine in every other VAG product. The 3.6 feels like a proper porsche engine. Somehow the expected handling benefit, light front, of the base didn't materialize either, at least to me in my biased stage.

Straight line speed...I don't know. I spent a day driving a friend's heavily modified sixth gen Camaro SS last year. It didn't have that much done to make more power, so it wasn't obscene, but driving on the freeway and getting into the throttle a bit was, um, eye-opening and usable often enough that it still sits in my head a year later.



OTOH, when I'm out with my wife, or kids, or any passengers, I'm pretty mindful of any driving action/maneuver that may be "fun" because it's not fun for them. At all. No matter what car. Unless it's someone like minded and looking for that experience.



Nice interior that's a decent place to sit forever, does the things you need it to do (back seat, cargo, etc), few things that drive you nuts, a solid and connected feel when driving, enough power to move when you can AND need to, and something that just makes you feel good to have.

That's exactly it for me. I really don't want a lot of cornering grip on a street car anymore but the balance of the car has to be right. It's one of the reasons I like the Boxster on lower (dry) grip tires. It makes the car more playful and entertaining.

I want enough power that the vehicle doesn't feel strained (the CX-5 fails in this regard which is my biggest complaint with it) and ideally enough that it's a little traction-limited coming out of slower corners but that's about it.

Ha - well said. Feel that way about my x3 - I actually like the damn thing (it’s comfortable, has enough power , practical and doesn’t annoy me) despite not wanting to. All the cars I want to want are way more expensive or way more impractical
