good visual on how large they have gotten https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2066188 |
Cool shots. Man the G80 is…yikes.
|
It's certainly quite large.
|
Very cool. There perspective on the shots does not help (meaning it's unfair), but you can still see the big jump from the E90 to F80 and from F80 to G80.
The F80 was a sharp car in and out. I miss it. |
Yeah man the F80 is really good; was just rewatching the Savage Geese review of it back in the day and it’s remarkable how much effort BMW put into making sure that it was lighter than the E90, despite its size jump.

Agree that they got a lot right with the f80. This pic made me realize the only m3 I've ever driven is the e36.
:dunno: |
Wow, really? I mean if you could only drive one that’s the one to drive…
|
I've driven the E30, E36, E46 and E90 M3s. No real interest in any of the others.
The E90 felt the best balanced to me, but the E36 is the only one part of me still wants to own. The E46 can be made to be incredible with some work. |
I guess I’ve driven them all now (and owned 4 of them). In contrast to JV, the E90 is my least favorite of the bunch; the engine is fun but was a pain to live with, and the chassis was…fine but not particularly engaging. The gas mileage was awful, there wasn’t a lot of space inside, the electronics and controls were garbage, and on and on.
In retrospect, the E90 was a car that was uncomfortably betwixt and between. It had gotten too big and heavy to keep doing what the E46 and E36 did, but it still hadn’t really embraced the junior M5 mission that the V8 and and the weight meant it had to carry out. Maybe I’m suffering from recency bias, but the F80 is a lot better car. Although it’s bigger, it’s lighter, and it seems to have grown into itself. Yes, it’s a little more like an E39 than an E36, but at least it knows what it is. And maybe it’s heresy, but the turbo six is a better engine for this kind of car than that little V8. I’ve written about the G80 elsewhere. I’m glad it exists and it’s about the only car like it left, but it’s close enough in performance and feel to the F80 that I don’t see any pressing need to upgrade, and of course the F80 looks better. |
