The D810 is great and a really solid improvement over the D800. If I were Kevin, who has all my old equipment :lol:, I'd sell the D800 and keep the D700 and the D810.

There is still something special about the D700. Just a no-nonsense solid camera with lovely color rendering. I should have kept it, but it would have put a dent in my serial acquisition plans.

I'm interested in the D850 especially for the articulated screen (which I have on my D500)--and all the other D500-like advances. I do some "studio" work for the magazine that has me standing on my head to compose with the fixed screen.

One thing I will miss about the D810 is the ability to use it as a master controller for multiple flash units. D850 has no built-in flash, but consequently better weather sealing.

Obviously, I've been reading too much about these cameras.

Yeah, but you can solve that master issue by putting something on the shoe. Going to the D4 from from the D300/D7000, it was something to something to deal with, too.

Yes. That is the way to go. I have two speed lights (SB-700 and SB-900), so I guess I'd need to add one more. Come to think of it, I have three flash units, including a tiny one made for the D5500. That could work. Maybe.

There are many options and possibilities. You could also add a commander unit that’s not a flash. Some of the cheap Chinese stuff, like Yongnuo, is pretty good, too.

But I do miss having the on-camera pop up. Built in. Nice to add a little fill when needed. No extra gear to carry, batteries to charge, etc.

Yes. I probably will too. But, more often than not, the lens casts a shadow over the flash area.

The smallest flash unit I have doesn't require batteries, but it's really only adequate on the 5500. (The D5500 also has its own pop up flash.) It's a very decent little camera, and my go-to when I want to travel light. I pair it with the 16-80 2.8-4 DX lens and it does quite well.

Edit: the little speed light (SB-300) does take batteries. Just never seems to go through them.

I've had mine for about 5 years, and am yet to get the itch for something new. I'll spring for the 300mm 2.8 before thinking about a new body.

They are built like a tank. Should last forever.

That’s a smoking great price! After the roof, with a new computer needed and a new Camaro in the near future, don’t think I can do it, but sorely tempted.

With the D500 and D5500, the burden was lessened on the D810. Hence the low shuuter count.

Also, we moved from a beautiful place to a less beautiful place...:(
