535i only 67 lbs heavier than 335i

The 535i is listed at 3660 lbs, while the 335 is listed at 3593. The 535 weighs 286 lbs less than the 550.

Do you think the difference in weight between the 535i and 550i make performance between the two a wash?

According to the specs, the 535 is 2/10s of a second behind the 550 and 335 from 0-60 (5.6 v. 5.4). In real-world, practical terms, I think the 535 is going to be just as fast as the 550 in everything except perhaps high-speed roll-on acceleration, and probably will be a bit more nimble, too.

as Ed and i have found, all of the technology is poured into the E60 and above --so it's always been odd, as the 3 series has grown, to see that we've reached this point where the E60 is less than/same weight as the E90 class of car.

the e60 gets a lot more aluminum.

and i don't think that's a rational reason to get the 550 other than pure disposable income. anyone sane would be fine with the 535 (esp. given its tuning potential). but there will always be people who prefer the v8 to the turbo six.

I didn't realize, at the time, there was a fair bit more weight engineering in the E92 (not sure about the E90), the thing even has plastic fenders.

But even with all that, it's still plenty porky at 3500 plus lbs.

I really want to like the new 'vert, with its 15000 nm stiff body structure - but at 4000 lbs, it's a tough sell for me, but judging by the response the car's getting, not a tough sell at all for the many buyers who're paying list and much more.

Plastic fenders? As in quarter panel fenders? ANd that's a good thing? I would expect that to add to the weight. Shows what I know.
