Well, shit

Boxster had a hard time starting today, then it misfires and gave me this on the way home. Limp mode, only able to do about 65mph, then only 45. I ran a few tests using the Durametric tool and its got low pressure out of the HPFP. apparently not only BMW DI engines have issues with them. Meanwhile our mazdaspeed with a direct injection engine is on its original pump after more than three times the mileage.

Annoying.

Jeff_DML 07-31-2017 06:20 PM

zee germans engineer everything perfectly. Must be the way you 'Merican's drive it.:)

yeah bummer, waiting for a issue with my turbo:eeps:

bren 07-31-2017 06:50 PM

I read a theory somewhere that never running the tank low may improve pump life. I'm crossing my fingers with the X3.

I got lucky with it just being a relay that triggered a light in the m3 the other day. When it threw the SMG light I started wondering if it was time for a manual swap. :ack:

JST 07-31-2017 08:29 PM

That sucks. How big a job is it to replace? And do 9A1 engines need walnut blasting?

rumatt 07-31-2017 09:05 PM

Drop it off and I'll send you the bill.

:D

Sorry man that stinks.

Alan 07-31-2017 09:48 PM

Arghh :ack: that stinks by any chance do you have a warranty ?

FC 07-31-2017 10:49 PM

Bummer. That sucks.

equ 07-31-2017 11:43 PM

I've heard of this before for the 987.2. Logically, 981's should suffer from it as well.

John V 08-01-2017 08:02 AM

Looks like roughly a 4hr job. Not too bad. 850 in parts with a core charge. Ugh.

No warranty.

rumatt 08-01-2017 05:12 PM

Going to do it yourself?

John V 08-01-2017 08:03 PM

Come on. Seriously?

I assumed the answer was yes.

Nah, he can have that thing. :bustingup

I called the local Porsche dealer and asked them the likelihood of Porsche doing a goodwill repair on this. They said they couldn't really determine, but they've had very few requests for goodwill repairs turned down. It's a $150 diagnostic fee for them to check the car out, determine that it is the HPFP, and make the request. If Porsche agrees, that gets refunded to me and I pay nothing. If they turn it down, I'm out $150, but I get confirmation that my diagnosis was correct.

As much as I hate going to dealerships, I'm going to do it. I set up an appointment for Wednesday of next week. Worst case I'm out $150, which is annoying, but meh. Biggest annoyance is I'll have to tow it down... by the time I got home my top speed had been reduced to about 30MPH.

The dealership is right next to the one that is doing the airbag recall on my race car on Friday of next week.

bren 08-03-2017 10:21 AM

airbag in a racecar. ha

Did said dealer have airbags in stock and ready, or did they have to order it? :eeps:

John V 08-03-2017 10:30 AM

They have all the parts.

I got my driver's airbag swapped out on the M3 in about an hour a couple Saturdays ago. I made the appointment on Friday, so they clearly are stocking the parts. The passenger airbag was done a while ago.

Had to make them reinstall it because it wasn't in straight thew first time.

John V 08-03-2017 12:53 PM

Mine is only the passenger's side, perhaps obviously (or not obvious... silly SCCA rules).

I am looking forward to being amused by the whole transaction. I'll probably be disappointed.

Seems like the smart choice. The very worst you can do is, as you say, get confirmation of your diagnosis. Or be pointed in the right direction if your diagnosis is incorrect (which has the potential to save you a lot more than just $150).

rumatt 08-03-2017 01:32 PM

Sounds worth it to me too.

I assume Porsche mechanics are generally competent and worth letting touch your car?

I don't know if that's true or not. I imagine there are good ones and bad ones, hopefully there is a greater percentage of good ones at a Porsche dealer but I have no way of knowing.

I have to assume there's not much damage they can do by plugging a scan tool into the car and maybe (but I doubt it) taking some fuel pressure measurements.

I would have figured you would know this BEFORE your new purchase?

John V 08-09-2017 08:05 AM

I towed the car down last night and dropped it off at the dealership. I just got an e-mail notification that they started work (this is a thing now?). So we'll see where this goes.

I don't remember every receiving notice that work started, but they do email/text when complete. It even includes a link to pay online, though I'm not sure what good that really does since you typically have to see the cashier to get your keys. :dunno:

Alan 08-09-2017 09:12 AM

Never got an email or text during or after work ... just a phone call during and after which I'm sure we've all had.

I would like to get an email knowing they started work ... that is pretty cool.

equ 08-09-2017 09:30 AM

I had something similar. Unprompted, they emailed me a video of the tech walking underneath the car and commenting during the last annual service. Rather boring for my low mileage, quasi-new boxster, but would be of interest for something that needs a lot of work.

That's great.

John V 08-11-2017 02:13 PM

Excellent news:

"Mr. Vitamvas. I just wanted to give you an update on the Boxster. At this time, the high pressure fuel pump has failed. This component is covered under the 8 and 80 emission warranty. We have the pump on order and it will arrive here on Tuesday. Once repairs are completed we will contact you. Please let me know if you have any questions. Linda Harouna, Porsche Silver Spring"

zach 08-11-2017 02:22 PM

sweet!

Josh (PA) 08-11-2017 02:59 PM

that's awesome.

ZBB 08-11-2017 03:12 PM

Cool!

Nick M3 08-11-2017 03:25 PM

Woo.

kognito 08-11-2017 03:53 PM

Great news! seems strange to cover it as an emissions item, but whatever

oh yes, of course. I am happy for you.

But in the past (long time ago) I had to write warranty claims for Dodge/Chrysler. Emissions claims usually are approved when an item causes an engine to fail inspection . . . No fuel pressure, no emissions, so I see the logic . .. it's just fuzzy logic! :D

rumatt 08-11-2017 05:54 PM

Awesome

Alan 08-11-2017 06:38 PM

Our '84 300SD received a new injection fuel pump in the late 80's as a 'failed emission' item. As the car was built (and registered) in California, MBZ was obligated with a 10 year, 100k warranty for select emissions related equipment above the standard 3yr/36k warranty. We could never tell the difference between before or after (as far as that went) - but - we took it. :D
That is the same car that I sold in the mid 90's for about $10k with 270k miles on it.

Whew!
