What should I get?

I'm waffling on getting another X5. It's nearly impossible to find ones with the adaptive suspension (threshold criterion), and I'm a bit worried that if we have another kid, the X5 will be too small.

Nobody makes what I want. The Q7 is too slow and I don't really want a GL63.

Escalade? Ugh.

rumatt 01-09-2017 11:26 AM

Do you need something now?

Wait until you have a kid to buy something huge?

I have no interest in owning our X5 out of warranty. It ends in June.

dan 01-09-2017 11:42 AM

how many kids do you have?

1 kid.

The X5 has a pretty small trunk.

dan 01-09-2017 12:08 PM

How about a sedan with a big trunk?

3LOU5 01-09-2017 12:22 PM

Acura MDX

Jeff_DML 01-09-2017 12:25 PM

yeah I am with bonoboy, not sure why you need a huge SUV with two kids(which I have). I want my wife to downsize from a highlander for her next car.

Josh (PA) 01-09-2017 12:34 PM

The new Volvo v90 wagon? E400 wagon? I'd think an X3 would be plenty big for a kid and a half. Realistically, it will be a year + before the second kid is dropped of by the stork. By then you'll be ready to replace whatever it is you buy now.

Acura MDX is always the 'smart' choice.

Sharp11 01-09-2017 12:52 PM

An X1 or X3 should fit the bill nicely, not sure why you think two kids would require a gigantic car/truck ... :dunno:

Also, the new MDX looks pretty good.

bren 01-09-2017 01:02 PM

Is the SQ7 a go yet?

We have the roof box for vacation. It's pretty much a necessity - or it at least makes life a lot easier. If you have a place to store it when not it use do that.

I also have a hard time imagining you'll spend more in out of warranty expenses than in depreciation on another uber-suv.

ff 01-09-2017 01:12 PM

To each their own, obviously, but a big SUV seems like overkill for 2 kids. The MDX would be a nice compromise. It's big on the inside without being obnoxiously large on the outside. Very good MPG, great engine, probably very good reliability and resale.

zach 01-09-2017 01:22 PM

Yeah, you guys are giving good advice. An MDX totally makes sense except it has a lame engine.

Some additional criteria: must have at least 400hp. I don't care about MPG too much as we only drive about 6K miles a year.

SQ7 is apparently unlikely to come to the U.S. or it would be perfect (assuming it would get the v8 from the S6 and S7).

Macan turbo or used Cayenne Turbo or wait for the new one

I mean, this narrows the list quite a bit, right?

bren 01-09-2017 01:33 PM

There's always the Jeep SRT8 in the x5'ish size realm, or a Cayenne GTS.

I don't begrudge the power requirement, but in this era of the 2.0 turbo you are probably going to have to have some wiggle room.

Our x3 with what? 300HP, can get a little "sluggish" when it's loaded down, but it's still faster than 98% of the other stuff on the road. You shouldn't really be racing around with 2 kids in the car anyway. ;)

Yes, thus my dilemma.

Bren - I agree I should be more flexible but I just absolutely love the engine in our X5. It's ridiculous.

seems like a good enough reason to get another one. SRT8 would be worth checking out too.

Not sure on the timing, but the new X3 will get an M version sources say.

bren 01-09-2017 02:00 PM

Wait, why aren't you buying a modelX? (Yep, now it's a Tesla thread.)

zach 01-09-2017 02:05 PM

Hahaha! I guess I should probably just go get another X5. I'm starting to think we drag too much stuff around given some of the responses here.

bren 01-09-2017 02:07 PM

My wife would fill the bed on the Ram if she could. I have to turn into some kind of puzzle/packing engineer to get everything in the x3.

The sooner you get them to your destination, the sooner they stop asking you "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" :)

Jag F-Pace ? R-Sport or S have the superchargered V6 380hp

TD 01-09-2017 02:53 PM

I feel like we've had this discussion before. So I worry this will read like a cut and paste from some earlier reply but...

Why on earth does someone need even something as large as an X5 for just two kids? As someone who has two kids, I don't get it. I especially cannot comprehend how going from one kid to two makes an X5 too small.

There is a stretch of a few years once they start having closer friends until they start driving when it's nice to be able to fit a couple of extra kids in the car. But you can already do that in an X5.

I don't get it.

Jaguar is bringing the xf wagon over this year as well.

Yes.

EDIT- When our kids were younger, the E36 M3/4 was the "big" car. Even for road trips with two kids, we always had enough space.

Nick M3 01-09-2017 03:12 PM

So what happened to strollers? Remember the ones that folded down to the size of a golf bag (or less)? It seems like those are the number one cause of kid paraphernalia bloat.

TD 01-09-2017 03:21 PM

Those strollers were the SUVs of strollers. We had one that never got used because it was so big and unwieldy. We used the nicer variants of the smaller strollers.

We also never did a diaper bag. We had this fold-up changing mat that you could stuff a couple of diapers and a soft-sided pack of wipes in to and it fit in a large handbag.

zach 01-09-2017 03:24 PM

We definitely carry around too much baby stuff, including the umbrella stroller which is on the larger side. There is no logical reason to need a car larger than the X5.

If one of you wants to volunteer to speak with my wife about her packing predilections, I'll give you her email address.

Zach's got a case of confirmation bias ...

A vehicle is more than just the engine - besides, you've convinced yourself you need 400hp, an arbitrary number really, while ignoring all the other factors that go into what makes an engine feel great: torque, where the power is delivered along the RPM band, smoothness, and how well matched the engine is to gearing and the weight of the vehicle.

You should take something like an MDX out for a spin - and if it's any consolation, Honda made its reputation on its engineering, particularly wrt engines.

zach 01-09-2017 03:41 PM

Nobody needs 400hp. I want 400hp because it's awesome.

TD 01-09-2017 04:02 PM

Here is the answer-

bren 01-09-2017 04:04 PM

Who gives a shit how much stuff he wants to take with him. Or how little you can get by with. The guy needs solutions here people!

With 400 HP you should be able to tow a nice little trailer full of gear. :D

Edit:
Does that Volvo use the same stupid 2.0 engine as the xc90? Because that would already be the solution if they'd put a real power-plant in the thing. I wonder if the hybrid version is any good...

Yeah those are sweet, but again, not enough power. IF I'm going to drive some sort of SUV/wagon thing it might as well be ridiculously overpowered. Just my preference, not saying that's for everyone.

I don't think it's a plug-in hybrid.

bren 01-09-2017 04:10 PM

Boston Volvo has 19 xc90 hybrids in stock. Just saying. :p

Including this R-design model:
