Why are people in the Twitter thread freaking out over this? My E46 is limited to 128 (ish.?). So Volvo's is a little lower than that. Who cares. In the US if you're going faster than 112 you're being pretty reckless.

Sure there are race tracks, but who takes Volvos to race tracks? I suppose on the autobahn it would be a bummer.

I doubt this will help prevent most accidents, but it doesn't offend me either.

Well, the reason people are offended is because Volvo is doing this to make a point—it’s specifically not about 112 mph on either side. Volvo is using mandatory speed caps to highlight the danger of speeding and (implicitly, by way of reference to the 3 point belt example) call for regulatory imposition of speed caps on cars. 112 mph is a shot across the bow, and is intended to be such.

People are reacting to the message, not the physical speed limiter. Which is completely fair, because the message is what Volvo is trying to send.

If a person is A) really interested in owning a Volvo and B) really wants to go faster than 112 MPH, I'm sure there's an aftermarket company that will be happy to remove the speed limiter.

I recall 112 being a magic speed limit on many cars from previous decades. Maybe that was due to the speed rating on the crappy tires being installed from the factory (?).

"S" rated tires (112MPH max sustained) used to be fairly common.

112 is 180 kph, which is why the weird number. But yes, it corresponds with a tire speed rating.

Again, the point here isn't specifically that Volvo limited its cars to a particular number--it's that Volvo is trying to make a point about the danger of speed and spark a conversation that will lead to regulatory imposition of speed caps.
