Best "dash cam" for ED trip
 

I suspect I should not over-think this, but I want to be able to record the ED trip as I drive.

I'd like a high-quality, wide angle-ish camera.

Does it begin and end with a GoPro? If so, which one?

I sense a "proper" dash cam will not offer great video quality, but I could be wrong.

Any input would be appreciated.:)

I think a GoPro would be way overkill. I think there are plenty of dash cams that do 4K video now for less than $100 probably

Sure, but are they good quality?

I see Garmin has decent dash cameras fir under $150. I'll keep looking.

Do you want the whole trip? Or do you want to be able to start/stop on demand?

If it's everything, it will add up to a lot of video which means a lot of time spent doing something with it. Might want to consider something that does decent time lapse stuff with one pic every second or five seconds or whatever.

My four knock off GoPro camera setup a few years ago was overkill. I still need to finish that video.

I haven’t looked closely at the feature set but I’d get something like that before a GoPro.

The blackview is also overkill.

I’d suggest looking for one of the $50-$75 dash cams on amazon that gets good reviews. 1080 should be good, and then get a couple relatively big memory cards so you can swap them out and move the data to your laptop. You will have 60GB+ of video per day at 1080...

I had a blackview installed in my Tesla for about 8 months. Kept nearly all the video from our big road trip a couple years ago, but like Clyde, I never got around to editing it down to either the key highlights or a time lapse...

Just be aware that most/all (?) of these dash cams do loop recording, where the video is saved in individual video files of a couple minutes each. When it starts running out of memory card space, it will start overwriting the oldest files.

A GoPro won't operate that way unless you tell it to. A GoPro can also leave the car when you're on foot, under its own power, and record footage as you walk around sightseeing.

My daughter has the GoPro Hero Session, and she loves it. It's very inconspicuous, mounting practically anywhere without being overly obvious or in the way. It's also waterproof (down to some depth). She records a lot of video of lacrosse, mounted to a goal, or to her head strap thing.

Not planning on recording everything, just the cool mountain passes, etc.

Ideally I’d get a blackvue for front+rear recording in a stealthy package.

At this point I am leaning towards the Garnin 65, but it’s still a lot of money. I can always use that in the LR4.

I bought a $100 camera (that everyone likes) to try out on the Miata and it has not worked well. I need to see what the deal is. It power cycles every 10 seconds. It’s probabl the power cable.
