I would be interested in how much the VGT helped since I thought my metzger 996 turbo was very stout and lag free based on all the turbo engines i have driven.
Edit: let's see what lemming says since he has basically owned them all

Nick laughed at me once. The turbo lag in the 991.2 TTS is wicked. The car shifts pretty fast, but until you’re about 3000 rpms, you’re waiting. The modern 911 Turbo feels robust. And ungodly fast. There’s SO much power. The engine feels underrated and acceleration well into triple digits is like a video game. The car made my ZL1 feel slow. And that car is not slow.
The 996TT….hmmm. I don’t have super fond memories of that car. It felt like something out of the 993 era, but in more modern clothing. I didn’t feel like the engine breathed well, and didn’t rev madly. It was better because of a manual, but I found the power to be wanting. There’s something I experienced in the 996 C4S and the 996TT where the engine feels like it’s straining and you think the car is going to explode. It doesn’t feel seamless.
The 987.2 is not super powerful, but you offset that by shifting more aggressively. 3rd gear is still hateful and is geared too widely for my taste. As Nick has also said, it’s not designed to breathe well. So it runs out of steam in the last third when you’re basically wanting more power. Smooth though. You never feel like the engine is about to grenade when you’re sitting at 4000rpms.
The 991.2 base Carrera (T), unsurprisingly, feels much more modern than the 996TT. This has to be pure technology. The engine spools faster and it feels like all 370hp. The 996TT always felt more like 250hp to me. The engine and gearing is well suited to higher speed cruising. The gearbox is just okay. It’s notchy even when warmed up. All in all, it’s great because it’s light, has some torque and is aerodynamic. So you don’t feel the car straining at speed.
The GT3 is probably one of my favorite cars of all time. But it does have serious character flaws. It’s an acquired taste for sure. If you are caught flat footed and in the wrong gear, it feels like you’re in a Corolla rental car. You really need your psyche to accept that you basically always want to be at 4000rpms. And that you have FIVE THOUSAND more rpm’s to go. Now that I’ve spent more time on more challenging roads, I don’t like the OEM springs. The damping is just okay. Shifter is overrated, but decent.
Hope this feedback helps.
I would like to drive a more modern 987.2 with more top end power, hence my interest in the 718 GTS. I think I’ll prob end up with one if I chicken out and do not buy a 992 S or 991.2 speedster.
