is an article in jalopnik... I saw my old cayman's carmax ad linked in the comments section. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes the top ten.

Not sure whether to be happy or to be sad, I could also buy it back (for about what I traded in for, three years and 15k miles later :toetap:). Most of my little mods, the crests, clear reflectors, red tails are still on and yes the vin matches.

That's almost what I was thinking I would end up with... Until I ran across the 997 that I ended up getting. While I would not have gotten a black car - yours looks almost identical to the Cayman that started my Porsche search.

Nice car...

At this point, a 2009 Boxster S should be under $30k...

You can find a 987.2 Boxster S for right at $30k. I did when I was looking this summer. If you're okay with stone chips, lack of maintenance history and / or high mileage, they're out there.

nice price. I couldn't find anything that cheap on the west coast when I was looking.

i really like the Cayman (and the Boxster) for how well they drive.

i thought it would be similar to the 911 and it mostly is, but how the cars are different is a lot of the fun. for example, on a rain slicked offramp that is a 270 degree sweeper, i can definitely tell the 987 has a loose tail and it's fun. under the same conditions, the 996 feels like you would have to exert a lot more force (or stupidity) to free up the rear.

the DFI 987s are rockets, though. and i'd always advise someone to drove those cars first, then a 996, 997 or 991.

it really helps one figure out what you want to buy.

My old cayman (I still think of it as mine, as I put on the first 33.5k miles) is still at Nevada carmax:

On the one hand, that seems like a pretty good deal. On the other, it's clearly above market, if it's been sitting this long with all that exposure.

Amazing how much Porsche you can get for 25-30k, as long as you don't want an air cooled 911.

Yeah - True.
That's how I ended up with the 997. While I would have liked to get into the 911 world with an SC or Carrera (or even a 964/993) - the prices on those cars was just too much compared to what a newer (dare I say 'better') car sells for on the second hand market.

Odd that it is still there though. You would figure that after some set time, they would drop the price a bit and let it go... and if it still doesn't sell, drop it some more and so on...

Oh well....

don't ever look back.

an SC or a Carrera 3.2 is a rolling anachronism. it's brilliant and charming in a 1960s kind of way, but when you put any watercooled porsche into the equation, if you can be rational, the watercooled cars blow the aircooled cars out of the water.

for an easy metric, your 997 is probably 3-4 minutes faster around the nurburgring than my old Carrera 3.2.

and moreover, after living with several flavors of 911 now, and comparing to the 987, i can freely admit the 987 is the best porsche I have ever driven.
