When both are equipped with six-speed manual transmissions, the M235i trails the M3 to 60 mph by a tenth of a second (4.9 seconds to 4.8) but is two-tenths quicker through the quarter-mile (13.4 seconds to 13.6). Because automatic transmissions have improved so much over the last decade or so, the M235i with its eight-speed automatic sprints to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and covers the quarter in 12.9

If the M235i can do 60 in 4.3 seconds (Holy crap that's fast) then where will the M2 come in. Dangerously close to the M3/4 most likely.

Hey... My streak of owning C&D 10Best cars continues!

Since '97, I've had 6 cars -- all have been on the list for that generation of the car...

Ouch. Maybe BMW cut back their advertising budget with C&D, leaving them no choice but to feature the smaller car in their 10Best.

In all seriousness, that list is pretty legit...and oddly enough, fairly resonant with the folks in this forum, if car buying preferences are any indication.

No doubt. BMW doesn't deserve the whole 3er line to be included. Perhaps the M3/M4 would have made it, but you can't single it out, so tough luck.

What I found surprising was that they set the price cutoff at $80k. That seems very steep to me.

The M235i seems great. Someone at work has an A3 sedan and I love the look. Nice and compact. Too bad BMW doesn't offer a smaller sedan. I don't blame them though. As someone with kids, I'd rather have a 3er. And if I had not kids, I wouldn't mind having a 2er coupe.

If I remember correctly, the first 10Best set a base MSRP of $50k, and they've adjusted it for inflation each year since. So $80k is the equivalent these days...

I think it's 2.5x the average new car price, which is how they adjust for inflation.

lame ducks:

i'm not convinced the CTS is dynamically better than the refreshed A6/A7, but it's obviously dynamically better than the 5 series or E class. still something to watch for next year.

in a similar vein, I expect the all new MX5 to shove the Cayman/Boxster off the list for next year.

I seem to recall (back in the 90's) that the formula was 2.5x the average new car selling price. $32k seems high for an average new car price, but maybe it is and maybe you are right and I am just "misremembering," as Clemens would say.

They singled out the M235 from the other 1/2 series cars. They singled out the Mustang GT from the rest of the Mustangs. They singled out the Tesla S60 from the other S cars.

Yet the others... :dunno:

It was $80k last year, too. It's always seemed high at first blush, but reasonable when you think about it.

Good point.

Then, there's that.

Wasn't the 3 series on that list for some outrageous amount of years? or was that the Accord?

JST

It was both. I think the 3er was 22 or 23 years in a row. The Accord may be longer than that.

Accord is a 10 Best since 1983. Incredible.

Last gen one should of not been in the top 10, IMHO. New one seems pretty good.
