Moved from the jalopnik board so everyone can see it since there's so much talk about this since FC stole his colleague's car.

From the comments:

" Used cars are gross. You and your followers here have the outlook of guys who drop out of college and want to pretend to be successful. Once you hit a certain income level you'll understand. A used car is literally not even something successful people think about. Nobody busts their ass in college (4 + grad + whatever if you're an MD) for the privilege of going used car shopping and sitting in some janky car 7 days a week. *Everybody* knows you're driving a second or third or fourth owner car. Bust ass in school and then at work and then buy a NEW dream car."

It sounds like him, but he was OK with used cars. He just had extremely high standards for them.

Years of therapy lie ahead for that poor lost soul ...

and i almost did just that (996 Turbo) --as long as you know that the maintenance is about double that for a normal 911 (which is of course reasonable), it's a great buy.

From the comments, it does seem like I should always be able to make my money back on my car given that:

-I'm putting on few miles
-The car is bone stock, in great shape, with no accidents and a clean history
-inoffensive color combo
-M64 means anyone who wants can tune it to a "reliable 600hp+" from what I read.

There is a chance I might have to sell my TT next year for a couple of reasons not related to the car, but I am hoping to hold on to it another 3 years or so. If so, at that point I'll probably go one of two ways:

A) Swap it for the most Boxster I can get
B) Get a new M3 and hope to add some kind of used roadster down the road.

B is the more likely scenario, if all goes well.

When I picked up my car, certified technician was working on doing new deals for a 964. $15,000.

He said the engine looked great but was leaking some oil so the (Greenwich) owner was having this done.

I was being slightly sarcastic about the 911 running costs (in case other people missed that).

As a new 911 (997) owner...
I didn't miss that. LOL

I have yet to experience this first hand, but I know that day is coming.

i'm taking my lumps for awhile with minor things. but it is still worth it to me, because it's a car that I wanted.

:dunno:

it's really not inexpensive, by any stretch, but the truth from every certified Porsche mechanic I asked was that it's much worse if the cars are not driven --the high mileage issues are easier to deal with, in their collective opinion.

Turbo's are a different breed of cat. it's $5100 or so for the parts and labor for a new clutch. And that cost is every 20,000miles for someone in stop and go traffic.

Nice to hear that, my old coworker had a 996 turbo that I was considering buying.
