E36 seat heater question

So I ordered a new plastic gear for the electric seat back on the passenger seat that has seem to become almost entirely stripped.

While I have the seat apart and out of the car, I also wanted to investigate possibilities linked to the heating element in the bottom seat cushion no longer working. The element in the backrest still works fine.

Is there a list of items I should test to see what the culprit might be besides the element itself?

I've researched this for the seats in my Grand Cherokee and it seems that the culprit is the stress on the wires in the seat base along the edges from entry/exit. No idea if it's the same problem for the BMW's.
