What are these long streaks of white crap that show up on the hood and roof after only a day of driving?

I'm assuming that I get them on the Miata, but they don't show because the car is white (duh...).

Stripiness up the hood. Nutty.

Salt. I get them all the time and it looks horrendous on my black benz. Then again, for the last couple of weeks the car has looked gray because of all the winter crap.

Pretty much. Although, by now, at 180K miles, I'm at the "I don't give a damn" stage, so it doesn't bother me long-term. But I would still like to see my car somewaht clean every no wand then.

 "In the cabin, officer. When the gentleman at the dealership was affixing the plates, he broke the front bracket and I'm waiting for a new one to arrive. By the way, officer, I'm not under oath or anything, am I?"

Seriously, I haven't decided yet if it's worth the risk. It probably isn't.

BTW, on that 500+ mile drive, I averaged under 20mpg. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of mileage I get on the way back at lower speeds (below the second ports opening speeds) and the cruise control on.

Let's just say I have been pulled over more than a couple of times since I removed my front plate (both in VA and MD). It has never been mentioned.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Years ago, I was ticketed in MoCo for not having a front plate, and not having the front tag was the reason that I was pulled over (not ot mention a number of parking tickets in DC for not having a front tag even though the car was tagged in MD). When I was pulled over, the cop was in front of me. He changed lanes and slowed down, got behind me and turned on the lights. :dunno:

I'd also been pulled over on a few occasions without a front plate, and it was never mentioned.

Then one day I was pulled over for speeding, the cop noticed I had no front plate, and just gave me a warning for the speeding but gave me a ticket for the no front plate.

I'm quite sure that he wanted to give me a ticket ($$$) for something, so I think I actually BENEFITTED from having no front plate! (non-moving violation)

:D :D :D

No, I know what salt looks like, and it's not grainy like salt. They don't salt in these parts, anyhoo. ;)

Bird crap then? :?

I have no idea. But I am talking about LONG streaks of salt... the entire length of my hood if I've been driving in the highway.

I think it's the fine 'dust' that is in the air that stick to the car in pattern matching the airflow. My truck has them all the time. Body seams and the like seem to bring them out. Even the edges of the 3M 'Stongard' tape leaves shadows (if you know what I mean.....)
Awful annoying regardless (but right now I'd just like to drive somewhere w/o getting sandblasted from all the stuff left over from the snow)
