Maybe this will get some attention. I am thinking of putting a deposit down for a 2005 S40 T5, AWD, 6 spd with SP. :D

It looks like a tempting package. The C1 platform is obviously vastly superior to the old S40, and with AWD and decent power it may be the best choice in the under 30K sedan segment.

OTOH, unless I absolutely needed AWD and a "real" sedan, I'd be hard pressed to buy the S40 T5 over an RX-8.

or a mazda 6 or a TL or a legacy GT turbo or a G35. the volvo, IMO, will be much like audi. competent, but nothing to raise your blood pressure thinking about when you're on a winding road.

BTW, I've driven the new TL, the G35 sedan and coupe, and the Audi A4 1.8TQ.

well, i don't have a judgement of my own on the car because i hate to rely on magazine reviews ONLY.

so i'll have to drive it myself and compare to my sense of the other cars in the class.

it's hard for me to give up sheer speed for amenities. with the xiT in the family, i think i've got that in spades --now i just want two things (1) commute-ability in foul weather plus dog portability (got that now) and (2) sheer speed in a no-nonsense, no excuses sort of way.

(1) is easy because the market is full of capable commuters.

(2) is hard because the price for a 'real' sports car is all over the map. i think i'm going to stick with my GM theme (subie is 20% GM, you know) and go C6 Z06, though. hard to turn down cubic inches plus 500 hp in a lighter package than a 996 turbo (my focal point to this point).

therefore, i've been where you are now. i'm trying to keep an eye on the pulse of this segment.

That's good lookin', does it have 5 cylinders too? There is just something wrong with having an odd number of cylinders :? , I don't know why it bugs me. 4-6-8-10-12

It does. The T5 has a turbo and puts out 218hp and 326 lbs-ft torque.

that output sounds more like a turbodiesel v8 engine (with the 326 ft/#'s).

;)

I sat in an S40 at NAIAS.

It's really small inside. Really, really.

Not sure why one would buy such a small sedan, sporty or no.

Yes, but it'll sound like "a BMW with bronchitis."

Volvo's five cylinder sounds so bad that that alone would probably put me off the car.

That and the fact that my Mom would disown me if I bought a Volvo.

The new S40 specs when compared to an E46 sedan specs clearly state that the S40 is just a tad larger. :?

You don't have to believe me. Go sit in one for yourself. Claustrophobic.
