Is it just me, or does it seem like MB only sells Silver cars these days?

I have to say that the same applies to BMW.

Her former SL500 was also Silver.

I test drove a few MB's when I was looking for my car. I really didn't like the look of most MB models in any color other than silver. Their color choices, IMO, are lacking and the other colors just don't show off the lines of the cars very well.

Beautiful! Congrats. I have the same car in the same color.... in 1/18th scale in my office at work. :D

I saw an E500 wagon at the dealer showroom in pewter silver. It looked like a good "I don't have to wash my car yet" color. But there was an identical wagon in plain silver and I think it looked better.

It is such an awesome vehicle.

My parents test drove a CL500 in Pewter Silver. While that is what my Dad would have liked to have had, my Mom likes the SL better (it's her car). She does like the Pewter Silver though.

Sidenote: I like the std. 18" wheels for 2004 so much better than the std. 17" wheels M-B had in 2003.

that car is a nice lesson in styling that is evolutionary but will likely be classic even 2 decades from now.

i've not seen any AMG version of that car, but everytime that i see an SL, i always crane my neck. it's beautiful.

Foreign Motors West had an SL55 AMG in Graphite metallic. By far the most ridiculously awesome color I have EVER seen in person. Also, the new SL is just a stunner in person and particularly in motion. It's like a goddamn sculpture. I just love it. If I had money to burn, I'd buy an SL600 and put the AMG kit on it. No better cruising car. I'd just love to have a V12.

I should change my handle to mbr230.

so what exactly is the point/distinction between the SL55 and the SL600?

Doesn't do it for me - busy on the sides, weak nose, and I never warmed to the headlights. But it's all personal taste.

The silver car that made me stop and crane my neck was the GT3 at Pacific Raceways a few weeks ago. The twin-turbo RX-7 and Esprit still do that to me. We'll have to see if the RX-8 and 645 wear as well on me, but they're looking it.

The SL55 is more sporty, whereas the SL600 is just a grand tourer. Of course both of them are GT's, but the SL55 has a more "aggressive" suspension and I think better brakes.

In reality, it all comes down to this: How much do you want a V12?

Personally, the SL500 is good enough for what 99.9% of drivers will do, which is drive around looking good. And of course, the car does it very well. It's not like the SL500 is a wimp either, but, you know what I mean.

If you had the money, I'm sure you could convince them to build you an SL65 AMG.

In germany, yes, I think. At least it was rumored. There was word of the US getting the CL65 AMG. But I haven't heard much about that ina while.

the front (which isn't shown) still is tame and looks too closely like a boxster.

i don't like the lack of hips, as a 993er, the 996 seems slabsided to me --the wheels are okay and the rear wing is vicious. but the rest is sort of tame to me. 99,000 (if you could get it for this price) tame.

but i love the fact that it's still rear engined and can lap faster than a 360 modena (see car and driver last month) stradale. :D

This difference between the SL55 and the SL600 is that you can hear the exhaust note of the SL55 down the block... And it vibrates the house when it leaves the garage.

Sometime, I'm going to have to videotape the speedometer...

the problem is that the SL500 is waaaaay to common already...I just saw 3 in 20 minutes on the way to run an errand

Not the case here (yet). Our local M-B dealer still has a waiting list and they are a fairly large dealer.

I do see them around here quite a bit considerign they cost so much. Then again, there are enough filthy rich people in the area. A few weeks ago I saw a guy in black 550 Maranello.

Still, I don't care how many SL R230's I see, they look stunning everytime.

I happened to be at the big Mercedes dealer (Fletcher Jones? I think that's the name) the weekend they received their first shipment of SL500s. The name is slipping my mind right now, but my dad was looking at C32AMG's at the time. The even let him drive one.

Anyway, the dealer delivered 21 SL500s that weekend. At about 100k a pop (you know they marked them up for the first few months at least), that's a lot of bank. They are becoming pretty common.

When SL500's are "common" in only a couple of years, you know they did a great job with the car.

No doubt. The car is beautiful and the fit and finish appears to be exemplary in my limited observation. It's performance is way beyond what the vast majority of its purchasers are capable of handling (which would include me if I were in that market). But if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, that car isn't necessarily it anymore, in spite of that price tag.
