Look what I just pulled off the race car:

I recommend using your massive powers of perception to see how nice and straight that backing plate it. :)

It just proves that you can't get more braking by pushing harder on the pedal. :)

Looks fine to me, it didn't break. :) Oh, for longer enduros, think pad change. :)

you could have just posted that picture and i would have guess right away "oh, that looks like a singular piston".

hee hee hee.

Damn.

So when are you getting a nice big-brake kit?

Not sure. I scored a set of 330i front brakes for $200, so I threw those on today.

geez.

is that from a single race?

Those pads survived a couple practice sessions and a sprint race with near zero wear. The 1 hour enduro pretty much raped my brakes.

so, the common thinking that OEM BMW brake systems are sufficient and just need better cooling/aeration does not necessarily apply, huh?

how much can you modify/upgrade the brakes to stay within the rules?

Maximum 4 pistons per caliper. :p

I'll probably get there sometime in the relatively near future.

it's a funny thing, i asking myself, which BMW could you take brakes off of to use for your spec car.

but you know what? there isn't a single one that i can think of that would have adequate clamping force for your application.

and yet, i can name OEM systems from porsche, ferrari, MB, subie, mitsu, cadillac, chevy......that have 4piston setups for you to use.

:(

But but, all you have to do is change the brake pads, mess with ducting, change the brake fluid, swap out the brake lines, and most of all, learn how to brake properly, and you won't have this problem. :sarcasm:

sarcasm aside, The Hack's point about that is accurate enough for HPDE's on M cars....in general. i still experienced brake fade deep into a session and i had to back off. fade, after all, is an inability of the system to dissipate heat --so technically, he is on target.

but Nick's picture is a clear demonstration of a mechanical shortcoming that no amount of cooling will ever overcome.

it's appalling, actually.

In 20-30 minute sessions, the stock brakes are perfectly fine aside from the lack of clamping force. Having to get on the brakes 200 feet sooner than most everyone else gets old. :p Put some real heat in them over an hour and they just plain fall apart. :)

Your car is just to heavy. :)

We use single piston calipers opn the SRFs and they work fine, even for 1.5 hour enduros. But we weigh under 1700 pounds with driver.

It's gonna get heavier after the 3.0 swap - I'm expecting 200lbs. of ballast in the trunk. In fact, it should be rear weight biased with me in it. :D

i know that you're going to get new brakes sooner than the engine upgrade --but isn't most passing done under braking in spec-type racing?

you're at a huge disadvantage.

Actually, this wasn't about Hack's posting, but the general BMW dittoheads defense of the indefensibly lack of brakes.

This is what BMW dittoheads always say when you mention that BMW's have no brakes. And I find it funny why one must pay 55 grand for an M3, spend another however much in $$ and who knows how much time to make the brakes suck less.

Putting new pads in the 4 piston calipers that my sister has in her $22k WRX wagon really pissed me off.
