Take the biturbo and drop it into the 1er.

BMW is about to turn their 1-seires into a serious road-weapon by dropping the twin-turbo 3.0-litre mill into the 1’s engine bay, which will give the baby bimmer a very healthy 306 bhp (229kW). This is an increase of over 50 bhp (37kW) over the regular 130 hatch. Expect the sports version of the 1-series to have an aggressive front spoiler with large air intakes and equally large M-spec wheels.

The new car won’t get the revered M badge, the M1 title is strictly reserved for the M1 supercar from the 1970s, instead the new super-hatch will get a 135ti badge as its title.

Who cares? We're not getting it, it won't have an LSD, it's ugly, it will still weigh well over 3000lbs, and it won't be that much cheaper if it does come.

I'm not pumped at all.

It's going to be terribly expensive for what it is, but it sounds like it could have serious potential in the fun category (with an aftermarket LSD).

I really wish I could stand how it looks. It sounds like a really interesting package.

and we probably won't see it in the US anyhow

Anyone ever see a 1er in person? I read one review where they stated the thing has very little rear legroom due to the short wheelbase and the driveshaft tunnel. I understand it's a small car, but they made it sound ridiculous.

Yes I saw one in Moscow last year. it looked better in the photographs than in person to me

That's a bad sign... it's usually the other way around.

I saw one in Iceland. It's tiny in the back seat. If you want 4 seats + cargo room, it is not the car for you.

Pretty much what I would expect from a car that size and class. You really only buy it as a 2 seater or if you have one or two very small children.

I guess I pictured the 1er as a BMW version of the Mazda3... but looking at the specs I think the Mazda3 is much closer in size to the e46.

To me, the 1er is just a Mini with different skin.

Yeah, except for that whole rear-wheel-drive thing.

But they both use struts in front, so they are the same car.

And probably $10K cheaper. But also puts out 750 ft/lb's less torque. And has the assemble quality of a 1986 Renault Alliance.

With inferior suspensions...

Uh oh, I don't want to get into the middle of the Why-McStruts-Are-Inferior discussion . . . that's been amusing to read over the last week or so.

Anyways, I saw one in person in Paris and did not like it at all. . . . it's like someone put a wagon top on the Z4* and then beat it with an ugly stick. The 1 Series never really looked good in photos, and unfortunately it looks better in photos than in person.

*For the record, I do like the Z4 (3.0)

Supposely...the 1-Series convertible will be unveiled at this years Paris auto show. I could careless, but at least I will get some sort of idea what the coupe will look like. If it is decent I will be fairly tempted by the coupe when it arrives.

I've sat in the 1er... Front isn't bad -- a little narrower than an e46. But there back seat has less legroom than in the MINI... Completely useless.
