"Capless fuel filling will make its way throughout our lineup going forward, and it's the direct result of listening to our customers, as we know that even small innovations deliver big customer benefits," Fields said Wednesday.
Ford first offered the capless fuel filler on the 2005 Ford GT, a small-selling $137,000 high-performance car.
But now the feature will go mainstream, after it appears on the new Lincoln MKS full-size sedan slated to hit showrooms in 2008. The feature is thought to be the first capless system in a mass-production car.
Interesting, wonder if the rest of the industry will follow suit?
On a side note our news reported that with higher fuel prices gas siphoning is on the rise. Accordinagly people are buying locking gas caps.
As a twist criminals are now putting pans under the gas tanks and punching big holes to drian the fuel, either that or cutting the fuel filler necks if accessable and not even messing with the caps.

If that's the concern, you just make the doors lock. :dunno:
The idea seems like a pretty sound one. It will probably cut down on service vists for CEL lights stemming from untightened caps. Of course, if they were allowed to use a seperate light that just said "Fuel Cap Not Secure" or something like that, it would also work.
What scares me about the idea is how prone the spring loaded flaps may be to failure. I can't count how many times I've seen those kinds of things break.

2 minutes later...
"Oops, did we say that we listened to our customers, and provided them a big benefit? What we really meant to say was that switching to capless fuel fillers will save Ford $400,000/year."
"Innovation"... "big customer benefit"...  That's Ford, innovating again. I'm surprised to hear that capless filler designs never existed before Ford put one on the 2005 GT. Huh.

With the kind of volumes they are dealing, they ought to be able to spec a pretty robust design (certainly durable well past warranty coverage) for short money.
