I never figured that replacing an oil pump would be as involved as it is turning out to be.
Oh... what's going on you ask?
My 2002 had developed a lag in devoloping oil pressure during startup and (when warm) had ~15 psi at idle. It seems to have been getting worse this fall so I figured I better get right on it... I took the car over to a fella's home that is doing the 'real' work. I'm learning a bunch (and filling in the holes of what I had not experienced... it's kinda fun) He and I are actually splitting up the duties pretty evenly. I'm just doing what I'm told and shown.
For those that don't know my car....My 2002 (http://www.bmwpugetsound.com/member_cars/khill_2002.html)
Well....
The engine is out and sitting on the floor halfway disassembled. YIKES!
To do it right, I'm pretty much getting to everything I could/would/should do to take care of any future 'possibilities'-
I replaced the main crank and con-rod bearings (since I was there anyway...)
They looked real good regardless...
New Oil Pump (old chain and sprolet were, ummmm... worn :? )
To clean things up a bit- Bead blast and paint:
Intake manifold
front covers (both top and bottom halves)
Oil Filter adapter
Water "T" fitting
Starter bracket
Oil dipstick tube
Probably other goodies that I can't remember (my back is going to be killing me after this is all said and done..... )
Engine mount brackets (painted black)
Oil Pan (cleaned up and repainted)
Starter (cleaned up and painted)
It's good to see how clean everything was down in the crank area. Spotless actually. Makes me kind of curious why the OP had problems. Mobil 1 has it's benifits.
Oh well...
Tomorrow, back to putting it together and install new clutch and exhaust. I Hot-Jet coated a new exhaust manifold and down-pipe set earlier as I knew I'b be doing this. Performance Coatings (http://www.performancecoatings.com/) did the work. Great job (at least as it sits on the floor. We'll see how they do on the long term.
Oh - FYI - I had the ORIGINAL front resonator (muffler) still installed after 31 years and 230,000 miles. I did replace the rear muffler about 15 years back though. Both the resonator and muffler are going to be replaced. I think I got my monies worth out of them. That and the clutch was installed in 1985 (I think) and had about 115k on it. It could have lasted many more miles in looking at the meat left. Brian Capp ( the fella doing the work with me) said I must have a real good touch on my left foot. That's what I get by learning to drive a stick with a 6 ton gasoline tanker truck... crashbox and all.
Stay tuned for to see how this all comes back together...
Sorry... got wordier than I thought..... I'm surprised I can still type... My fingers are just about worn off.....
Oh... I've come to the conclusion that working on your own car is a fun thing. I would not want to 'have' to do this every day as a 'job'. I'll stick with telling people how to fix airplanes. he he
