The lady that gave me the 528E now wants to sell it. It's really been more of a loan than gift. I've put a fair amount of work and money into the car and want to make a fair offer for it.

It's a 1983 528e, auto, leatherette, 90K miles. The body is straight but the car sat under a tarp for years and the wind and dirt wore the paint to the primer in the major contact spots. Interior is like new, just needed some cleaning. The engine is a bit rough, not from miles but from sitting so long. It burns a quart of oil every other week and oil fouls plugs twice a year.

I've also put new brakes, tires, and exhaust (totally rusted out) on.

So it's a low mile clean car but with some issues. I'm thinking $2500

What do you guys think? It runs and drives well.

I'd say about that....

Maybe even a bit less since you've already put in some $$$...

But I'm in the same ballpark in values as you...

A 24-year old AUTOMATIC eta BMW (that isn't a desirable model) which burns more oil than an RX-8 and has the paint of a late 80's Chrysler is not worth $2500. Sounds like a sub-$2,000 car to me. :dunno:

Well, there's a risk in offering less. As you've put money into the car, it would suck if they turned around and sold it to someone who offered more.

But as you're obviously on good terms with the owner (or else I doubt you'd be in a position to "borrow" the car), I'd assume you'll be able to work out a mutually agreeable price.

Nah, sorry. Sub-$500 cars don't even run. Actually sub-$1000 don't usually run either. TD is right in that if I lo-ball the price I risk it selling to someone else and losing my investment. Of course I mostly write that off as rent anyhow. I think $2500 is fair. $2000 might be "more" fair. If you look at the average $2500 car they are not in this good of shape.

The way you described it, it was in very poor condition. It looks quite decent there.

It's had the "Doug" touch.

I don't understand this "depreciation" you people talk about. Can't you buy a car, hold it, and then sell it for more than you paid?

The car sounds like it barely runs to me. :dunno:

It does look a lot nicer than I pictured based on your description.

It's probably not more than that car originally stickered for. Not that this guy isn't compeltely insane (or just using eBay as a free classified - intending to take a fair offer offline and bypass eBay's fees).

I worked up the original sticker price on a certain M3/4 at one point and, IIRC, it was something like $46-47K.

Fair enough, but the guy is still smoking crack.

As I said, I concur. Again, unless it's that high to guarantee it doesn't sell through eBay and he'll actually take a fair amount offline.

But I'm inclined to assume he's a looney.

.

I know your not aware of this since you don't use ebay but Ebay charges around $40 to $50 to place the ad whether you sell it or not and if it does get sold through it's only another $40 ...

Exactly.

But it's still an autotragic eta that needs an engine rebuild. :dunno: It's worth whatever you are (or someone else is) willing to pay for it. Based on the pictures, I think $2,000ish is probably the upper limit.

I'm not sure what to do: :ack:, :?, or

A 92 M3 sedan for $73,000. The best part is the "Check the KBB value" link near the price. It's just urging people, "go ahead, try and find the value of a 92 M3".
