So, I went to a "customer care" evening at my BMW dealer tonight. They had their service department available for questions, including a BMW Step guy. I asked him what the sweet spot was for problem-free BMWs--past and present. He said the 2002-2004 E46. And then he threw in that the e39s are pretty good, too--no year range specified. He said his daily driver was an e36 318i.

All the staff admitted that the new BMWs had lots of electrical/software gremlins (because of the "sophistication" of the new cars' electronics.)

As an aside, it was interesting to hear the staff banter in e90, e46, e39, etc. terminology. Most of the audience didn't know what they were talking about and they had to stop and translate into model years. But a number of the attendees DID know what they were talking about. That's the part that surprised me.
