When I look at that price, I literally have to try hard to keep from busting out loud in laughter (I'm at work and it'd draw a lot of attention). Even with that mileage, bboy is pretty much correct. $15-16K is a lot closer to realistic.

And if I still wanted an E36 M3/4, I'd keep mine. It runs strong, feel tight and I know where it's been (for better or for worse).

Not... gonna'... happen...

(And I admit these cars don't like cold much. Or snow. But rain?)

Either he/she is on crack or they expect their buyer to be.

Yeah, when?

The value has dropped A LOT in the last year. Just go to any of the price sites (kbb, edmunds) and see for yourself.

Well, this is the Caly Bay Area we're talking about here where all sense of property value is out of whack. :loco:

But I agree that Rain Man needs to quit hanging out at the Haight-Ashbury district, even though there might be a K-Mart there that he buys all of his underwear from.

Just a few months ago

I sold mine for $25,800 about a year and four months ago I think. It had way more miles on it than that one does. It also had a few months left of CPO warranty.

Here's a list of comparable prices. I doubt that the sellers will get them, but it's more than two people trying.

All it takes is the right mix of money and will to make a sale.

Doug felt that his car was worth that kind of $$ and was willing to wait for the right person to come along. If he was in a hurry - That would have been a different story.

I had a neighbor (at the old house) that has/had a 1998 M3/4 that is 100% perfect. He never drove it. All he did was pamper it - it looks as if it just rolled off the showroom floor. It had ~24,000 miles as I recall and he was asking $27k. I seriously considered it but then we moved the money kind of had to go into the house. Since then, I bought the 740 but was also thinking of taking another look at the E36.

Heck - Patty is talking of dropping the Mercedes (200,000 miles and 19 years) and is wanting a 'sporty car'.

Ummm..... ;)

I saw a nice condition (original owner), 49k miles, 98 m3/4. Owner wants $21k. I actually went so far as to offer him $18k but could not justify anything further. Auction is $14k. KBB Private party (excel cond) $16.5. He has some 3rd party warranty that seems decent so I added some for that. He's currently advertising on bimmerforums. Watch for it in the roundel classifieds. I think my offer is rational and fair. He will only get a higher price if the buyer is emotionally dependent on e36m3's.

04 zhps are down to about $30k, I'm going to spend $20k on an 8 yr old car? Yes, it drives like a swiss watch, so nicely mechanical and smooth but it seems that it's at the age where things start going wrong. Also, over bumps, I felt (imagined?) flexing. I have this bias that the e36 body is not so strong. Can't get the picture of the one that failed euroncap out of my mind.

I could never imagine anyone paying more over 20K for an E36M3 no matter how nice (except for bubble cars maybe) considering my '03 ZHP is in excellent shape and I would be happy taking 25K.

I know there is a lot left unsaid, but I am not about to write a 2000-word post on a ZHP vs E36M3 compare/contrast exercise.

2003 Imola Red ZHP like mine (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=191969249&dealer_id=4395561&car_year=2003&adCertifiedCheck=n&search_type=both&make=BMW&model=330I&transmission=Manual&distance=200&make2=sel_one&address=02021&advanced=y&certified=&max_mileage=&max_price=&bkms=1139515497564&min_price=&end_year=2004&color=&start_year=2003&drive=&car_year=2003&isp=y&engine=&body_style=SEDAN&doors=&lang=en&fuel=&cardist=179) (mine has 39K miles.

Simple. Your 330i doesn't say M in front of it. It might be marketing, but it's still a fact of the market.

Pristine examples of a desireable car are worth more than blue book value. Nothing new there.

But $40K? Nearly as much as the car was new 8 years ago? Absurd.

I saw the asking price in the OP and immediately looked for "CA" as the state.

This is soooo true! My friend just sold his 99 "AUTO" convert for 22K with 78K on it. Was in ok shape. This was in NorCal. Happens up here all the time.
