DETROIT – Honda Motor Co., in a further effort to bring back young buyers into its Honda brand, is expected to unveil a sporty, performance version of the redesigned Honda Civic sedan at the Chicago auto show Wednesday.

Individuals familiar with the move said the four-door Civic Si will expand Honda's sport-compact car offerings beyond the two-door Civic Si coupe which the Tokyo-based auto maker began selling in the U.S. in December last year.

The individuals said the new Civic Si sedan won't hit dealer showrooms until near the end of the year, but when it does, it is expected to help win back young consumers whom Honda lost during the past decade when it sacrificed the Civic's styling and performance in exchange for more comfort and safety.

The Civic Si sedan, the individuals said, is expected to come equipped with an engine powerful enough to produce 197 horsepower. They said Honda has marketed performance versions of Civic hatchbacks and coupes in the past, but this is the first-ever four-door sedan Si.

The individuals said the car, with more room in its back seat compared with that of the Civic Si coupe, is intended to cater to practical needs of today's young buyers who they said look for not only performance but utility in sport-compact vehicles.

It wasn't clear how many Civic Si sedans Honda is planning to sell a year. The company has said it aims to sell a total of 15,000 Civic Si coupes this year.

A four-door Si. Bizarro. It would take some pretty serious cosmetic changes before I would like that car, although I can see its utility.

I don't know about you, but I think this looks pretty good:

Yeah - Looks good overall. I could do without the cheesy rear wing though.

I'm still waiting for the RWD sedan based on the S2000...

Notgonnahappen. S2000 is on its own dedicated, optimized chassis design that's not based on anything else Honda makes. You might as well have asked them to make an NSX crossover that seats 5.

The new Civic looks numbingly stupid from the side. 3/4 views tend to hide the weird and ungaingly slopes of the hood and windshield as they crash into each other. I agree, these photos don't look so bad...but the real thing? Gack.

Yeah, I've heard that as well. There were rumors when the S2k was first announced that Honda was considering a sedan spin-off of it. Its too bad they won't consider it. I guess they can build the RWD S2000 because its a low production car and they don't need to worry as much about lowering costs through parts sharing (its sort of a "halo" car for the Honda brand). But, if they did a sedan it would need to scale up to larger production numbers and would have to be built in a more cost efficient way.

But, damnit, I want a RWD Honda sedan!! I know it would be awesome.

I think that would be great as well. But asking Honda to do it with a stretched S2000 chassis goes well past blue-sky thinking.

These are pshops, albeit well-done ones. We'll see the real thing when it debuts today.

I guess I was thinking more like "a sedan like the S2000". i.e. RWD, small, nimble, potent 4 cylinder, great handling.

I hope the "i-VTEC DOHC" decal on the rear door is removable. Yikes.

I bet you could sell the thing on ebay.

Those decals are no different from the ones that came on at least two previous generations of the Si. Either way, I'm sure they're vinyl and therefore removable.

I suppose, but aren't they a bit tacky? I think the Si on the front grille is nice and tasteful, but stickers on the doors? :ack:

Nooooooo! Whatever you do, DO NOT remove the decal. That's where all the power comes from. If you remove the decal the engine power instantly drops.

Why do you think those decals are so popular on ebay? Every on want to put them on their car for more power!

Seriously, while I can respect the car for it's performance potential and what Honda is trying to do to it, its juts plain old bland to me. :ack: Kinda looks like a smoother Ford Focus sedan. :dunno: Ooo excitement.

See what I mean? From the side, the profile is just...bleagh. The coupe has a much more cohesive and attractive profile to it.

I like what Honda did with the Canada only Acura CSX (Civic).

By "what Honda did" you mean "put an Acura badge where the Honda badge was?"

The interior has been upgraded, and I like the CSX headlights.

i'd surely buy the Civic Si coupe/sedan over the MCS any day of the year, though.

it does look odd, but i prefer that sort of "odd" to "cute".

I'm exactly as likely to get a Civic Si as I am to get an MCS.

0% chance of both.

i think the civic 4dr would be fun on a daily basis.

just not my cup o tea. rather have a less manic engine with some torque, too for the daily grind.

I like the concept of the Civic Si sedan over the MINI Cooper S, but I bet it's not as much fun to drive. Still, tried that. No more fwd for me. Even with the MINI fun factor thrown in.

Since I'm nowhere near a Mini dealership... I'd only consider the Honda anyway from a service standpoint.
