Whatever it takes to stop those insane chases.

Very neat idea. Though I suspect the police will still have to stay pretty close to them, otherwise ditching the car and running is a pretty viable escape option.

Bratton, who often calls the city the car chase capital of the world, was asked why there are so many pursuits in Los Angeles: "There are a lot of nuts here," he said.

There are a lot of nuts in most big cities, though LA probably attracts a fair bit more of 'em. The difference is that here in LA, they have much easier access to cars compared to many other cities.

Neet idea...

But how did the title get to say "Gum Ball" when the article says they resemble "Golf Balls".

Does someone not know that golf balls are a bit bigger than standard gum balls?

It's a combination of factors...the geographic size of the area ("LA" isn't just the city of Los Angeles, or even the county), the number of people living in that area...and, we must not forget, the sheer number of TV helicopters to broadcast the chases.

At elast according to an article I read in yesterday's Post, there was a rather involved chase around here Friday. But I don't think there was any live coverage of it on TV. (Story here- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/05/AR2006020501087.html)

Personally, I think the high profile coverage the media in LA gives these chases actually encourages more chases.
