more comments:

"Acceleration: Launching this car is exercise in throttle modulation: mash it and you'll get massive wheelspin. Be too subtle and you'll creep off the line. Proper technique is a result of trial and error. A six-speed manual would be far easier for and experienced driver.Quickest runs made in S6 with DSC switched off.
Braking: There's little technique involved in stopping this big sedan. As with all ABS systems stopping distance is mostly a matter of grip. Be prepared for marginal fade after several hard stops from above 80 mph.
Handling: Very little stands out here either. Aside from massive grip, the M5 is textbook rear-wheel drive. Powerslides are fairly easy with DSC off. Just be sure you know which paddle to grab if you need to shift midslide. It's not as easy to figure out when the steering wheel is upside down."

marginal fade, huh? and to be prepared for it? :-)

i'm almost tempted to own an Evo. just for a little while.

(sigh).

if you compare the M5 numbers, it slalom'd right between the Evo and the STi.

Go drive one. That's the quickest way to get rid of all that temptation. I guarantee you'll never think about buying one ever again. :D

i'm not so caught up in the japanese chintz of an interior as some, but having the option to delete that rear wing in the RS appeals to me. the V feels too refined for me and i'm thinking about bailing, which is why i'm exploring many options, including the Evo RS, the G6 and the 335i.

The chintz wouldn't bother me either.

I just think the Evo and Sti both drive like crap. But I'm clearly in the minority there.
