View Full Version : License plate question
I have BMW CCA tags on my M3. If I sell my M3 some amount of time before I take delivery of another car to replace it (I'm talking weeks or months, not days), what can I do to keep the same tags? Anything? Or am I stuck requesting new ones?
Does MD allow transfering of plates, like FL does? I'll bet that you could remove the plates, and then do the transfer paperwork once your new car arrives.
You'll probably have to keep paying ins. and then transfer the tags.

On a car I no longer have?

Do you Marylanders own the plates, or does the State control their use in all circumstances?
You might hit your State DMV or BMV website for more info. Often times they have FAQ's that address situations like this.

You can transfer the tags. There's a place on the title application to do that. The issue is having continuous insurance coverage on a vehicle. Which I've ignored several times.

Yup. Otherwise you pay a $150/day penalty.

You just have to prove that as of the date you disposed of the car you had insurance coverage.

the tricky thing about this is that the National Capital Chapter of the BMWCCA is the gatekeeper for the tags TD is talking about. I am guessing that his biggest concern is keeping the number that he has. MVA's website is so pathetic as to be next to useless. I'd call MVA and see where they are on it. I'd also send an email to Steven (Schlossman, or however you spell it) to get you in touch with whoever is handling that function for the club.
This would only make sense if you were to purchase another BMW. Interesting...

Actually, I thought about keeping the tags regardless of what I get. I think they'd look great on a Mazda.

Might not be able to transfer to a leased vehicle, since it is technically a different owner. Dunno.
Would look good on a Saab, though.

When I tried to cancel the insurance for the E30, my insurance company asked me if I had the plates still. When I said, "yes", they would not cancel the insurance, despite the fact that I had sold the car 2 months ago. They said if they cancelled it, the state of NY would issue me a ticket for having plates with no insurance. :?
Aparently it's the plates that matter, not whether you have a car. And of course, this is NY. :duno:

I have all of the old license plates from my (many) cars over the past few years. I hope no one comes looking for them. :eeps:
And it may not be a license plate, but both my old Jeep and my current Focus wear the E30 M3 SIG sticker with pride.
I don't know which system I like better -- where the car keeps the plates, or the owner keeps the plates.
AZ recently switched (2002 or 2003) systems to where the owner keeps the plate -- so if you sell a car you keep the plate.
Before the plates belonged to the car and were transferred with a sale. There was a provision to transfer the plate to a new car though if you had a personalized plate or other special plate that you'd want to keep on your new car. MD must have something like that...

I don't know the laws anywhere (including Massachusetts). I upgraded to special plates last year and kept the old ones. Dunno if I'm in trouble or not.

OK - I'm some ignorant west coaster....
What is the deal with keeping plates? I looked at the DMV web sites (for a couple of the states in question) and couldn't really get anywhere... at least with out knowing what I'm supposed to be looking for...
The rules I'm familiar with are that 'generic' plates go with the car. If you have personalized plates - You can keep them if you have another car to transfer them to. If you don't have that option - You loose rights to them and return them to the state (figuratively anyway).
I take it that isn't how it works over your way...
???
Here in Illinois the plates stay with you after you sell the car. (They stay with the owner.) I have many of my old plates. The new owner of the car must apply for new plates and pay the license fee to register them on the new car.

In Indiana the plates belong to the owner as well, just like your dental plates. :zahn:
