2010 audi a4 2.0T quattro, 6-speed manual, ibis white/black leather. Options:

- premium plus trim (ipod, bluetooth, multi-function trip computer, heated front seats, LED lights, xenon headlights, auto wipers/headlights, fully auto climate control 3-zone, garage door opener),

- sports package (18" 10-spoke wheels with 245/40-18 tires, bolstered seats with thigh support, lower/firmer suspension, 3-spoke perforated leather steering wheel, perforated leather shift knob),

- bang & olufsen audio,

- exhaust tips.

MSRP was a hair under $40xxx if I remember correctly. It has all important options but NAV. It does have a great satellite radio/ipod interface.

No modifications but a bit of programming: steering set to 'dynamic' permanently, LED's stay on when signaling.

37400 miles, over maintained with oil changed every 5k on the dot, factory warranty expires 10/15/2013. Has one free audicare service remaining: 45k. Has transferable wheel & tire warranty. Long term real MPG average: 27 or higher. No oil usage.

No paint or bodywork on metal ever. No major warranty items ever.

Color me a tad biased at this point, but based on the cars you list as possible replacements, you really ought to go test drive a Golf R while there are still copies available. You might be surprised.

Equ has posted his impressions of the R before; in rough summary, he liked it but didn't love it, in part because it felt too coarse.

I do agree with TD that it's worth putting on the list for further review, if only because a single test drive can sometimes leave an erroneous impression.

That said, if I were in equ's shoes I might well buy one of the last E92s, in 335is guise.

True, the golf R is the 'mudgeon voiture du jour. I wonder if the brand new car I test drove was a bit off or somehow the saleslady was not too comfortable or what the deal was... In any case, the test drive did not work. I should give it another shot. If we kept 3 cars, we'd certainly have one AWD. But with two cars total and really one for myself, I'll likely go RWD.

Is there a real difference between the 335is and the 335i? I'm not a fan of 19" wheels with rubber band tires. Nor of high prices.

After yesterday's successful 335i test drive, I was thinking of going with a low mileage '10 to bag a n54. That engine felt slightly more thrilling to me than my (distant) memory of the n55. Mileage (+1mpg?) and reliability (if any difference) be damned.

I actually made my a4 post after driving a coupe yesterday and seeing the one you posted! That is a dream set up at a very good price. Guess what, it's sold and they're still keeping the ad up... I was also told that I was about the 40th person to call.

Not much of a difference. Probably not worth the price. I'd be tempted to spec the car from new so that I could get it just as I wanted, and I'd be tempted to lease assuming that the programs are still decent, and if I went that route I'd want the 335is just for the engine. But a '10 sedan is probably more fiscally responsible.

Sarafil and I had this discussion recently; the BMW website somewhat ambiguously suggests that the 3er "is" uses the N55 now (referring to the engine as "TwinPower"), but 'fil was confident it was still an N54. I found a BMW internal document on e90 post that shows he is right and the BMW website is wrong.

Z4 35is and 335is are still running N54. And 335is comes standard with 18" wheels.

Lease programs on the coupe are very strong right now. I'd strongly recommend running some numbers. 24/15k residual is 68% and 36/15k is 62%. +2% on either to do 12k. $1500 cash from BMW plus $750 loyalty if you qualify (not sure what the age cutoff is and if your E39 would qualify you).
