So, not able to get the Turbo sideways is really really bothering me, and I am actually looking at swaplease to see if I can get rid of it.
I have been following the 996 GT2 market closely, and so far, no dice. Red or yellow are near impossible to find. What's with all these old farts and their silver and black GT2's? Don't they know that girls half their age respond well to bright colored sports car along with their nice bald heads?
The reason I am seriously thinking about getting the 996 GT2 is because of the fact that you cannot order a 997 without sunroof. It means, as it does BMW, that PNA did not submit a non sunroof 997 shell for FMVSS testing. So if the 997 GT2 and GT3 do come in the U.S. with their M64 block (hopefully), they will all have a nice big hole in its roof.
My other worry is that PSM will be standard. As you all know, PSM cannot be completely disabled, which is why the GT cars are so lovely, they don't got no stinking PSM.
That's the current quest, it would be a nice Christmas present for myself indeed, much like the Turbo was two years ago.
Then I can go smoke Hack in his 645.:mad2:

like you couldn't already smoke Hack in his 645.
but a GT2 (or GT3, mind you) would be nice because you'd never lose money on it. not that you would on the TT, but those other two are made in even fewer numbers.

i really like the lines of the new 997S (return to the curves of the 993). that's about the only thing i would have reservations about with the 996s (obviously you don't have this problem with the TT or the GT2).
do you know more about which engine block they will use for their performance line of cars?
what about the badly kept secret that future 911s will migrate to the mid-engine configuration?

At this point, my concern is that if I am going to drop the kind of coins required for a 997 GT2, I won't even be able to get it without sunroof and PSM.
That to me is the appeal of the GT2's.
Oh and since the residual of the GT3's are way worse than a GT2, I don't think the little woman is too keen on me trading the Turbo for one.
On rennlist, you have someone insisting that the GT3 will have the M64 block. However, they are also saying that PSM will be standard, and we already know that they are shoving sunroof down their U.S. customers throats for not testing a non sunroof shell for FMVSS.

Why can't you get the Turbo sideways?
The PSM will turn itself on (yes, even with the big dash light telling me that I have turned off the PSM, danger! danger!) if it detects that you are trying to get the car really sideways, like say, stopmping on the gas mid corner in 1st.
I just won't let you. I already have a car that won't let me go sideways in dry condition for its lack of power, I want a car that has tons of HP's to let me drive sideways dammit.:irate:
Well, actually GT3's will let me go sideways too. Too bad the residual is so shitty on a lease for that thing.

Or better yet, why WOULD you want to get the Turbo sideways?

Or better yet, why WOULD you want to get the Turbo sideways?
One of the reasons why I enjoyed the M3's so much, both the E36 and the E46, is that I basically turn the car using the throttle.
You know, slight turn on the steering wheel, stomp on the gas, catch the car, voila, you made the turn.
That and DSC and ASC+T can actually be turned off and stays turned off.

i don't think stuka has exhausted all of his options just yet.
there two approaches i can think of: reprogramming the software or overload the chassis with a lot of power.
at the end of the day, though, stuka, you're stuck because you just basically figured out that after giving the TT a fair shake that the GT2 is more your cup of tea. there is not a lot of room to go elsewhere for what you want in the Stuttgart stable.

Do you spend so much time on the track that this would be a requirement?
Also, isn't that what the steering wheel is for?

isn't there a relay or a fuse to pull to disable the PSM? there must be. it should be simple to do.

It's easier to get the car sideways without ABS. Under braking, at least.

At the end of the day, I realized that AWD is not my bag, and I am not going to spend $$ Frankensteining my Turbo by taking the front axle and half shafts off, etc, etc.
The problem is I can't find a frigging GT2 in red or yellow. Actually there are two of them, but the yellow one has over 10K in miles, and is priced too high for a 2003 10K mile car.
The red one is a possibility.
The last bit of pain in the ass is the fact that Chase won't let me sell my lease. So according to leasecompare.com, I have to have another leasing company buy out my lease, release it short term, then get rid of it.
The little woman has taken quite a liking to the Turbo, and actually didn't want me to enlist leasecompare.com's help since she wants us to keep it. Must be the bonding experience that she had with the car at Button Willow...

i'd just wait it out then, stuka.
the prices will soften for the GT2s once the 997 variants come out and even then, you may decide that you actually like the feel and handling of the 997 chassis then.
you can't lose much if you wait your lease out --but you stand to lose quite a bit if you get impatient. just enjoy the car and realize that you know it's your interim car.

i agree with stuka, though: if you're paying that much money for a car, it should be configured as you would want it.
personally? i think he should give up the ship because Porsche is going a little soft and he should start thinking Ferrari.

Well, my wife read a few Z06 reviews and actually asked me to look into it (her dad had a Stingray when she was a kid, I think, dunno much about 'ermican cars).
I configured one, and ran some lease numbers at a few places, and for a 68K car with the same standard BMW lease term (15K, 0 down, three year), this thing is only $100 less a month in lease payment than a lightly optioned M5 at MSRP (I know where to get one) using standard BMW leasing numbers.
The residual of the Z06 is so bad that it's laughable, and I am not sure why.
We might go down to a P car dealership this weekend that has a yellow GT2 with 10K miles to look at it.
After my negative experiences nad the lack of writeoff's with financing cars, leasing is the only way to go. And unless we drop 68K on a depreciating asset, the Z06 ain't gonna happen.
As far as your list, I am only interested in the GT2, the Z06, and the F car. Of the three, I am unwilling to pay the stupid $$ required to run an F car, and the Z06 stupid residual pretty much rules it out as well since at that price tag, she is going to want the M5 instead for its utility which the Z06 doesn't have.

the GT2 is cool, but you know the new one is going to be faster and that is going to bother you because you're still going to have to pay a nice premium to get one now. (it would bother me).
i really think you'd enjoy the F430 or used F360 car experience.....talk about holding residual power, right?

GMAC has to make money somewhere. You boost residuals on slow selling cars that no one wants, and you offer crap residuals on hot cars that people will spend lots of money for. Think of the poor residual on the Z06 as a mark-up by the financing company. BMW, by the way, did the same thing on the M3--the residuals on the early E46 M3s were ridiculously low. EDIT: What's the residual on a new Ferrari, anyway?
Dude, do you own any real estate yet?
I just couldn't in good conscience plunk down GT2/F-car money without having some sort of appreciating asset as well, to ease the pain.

Well, when you get outbid by 100K on a 1200 square foot house that listed for 830K in a normal neighborhood, and realizing that even if you have a $6000 mortgage payment, you are still better off renting and investing because of AMT and property over value, buying in the LA market just doesn't make sense.
There are two condos in my neighborhood right now that have been on the market for a month and not moving, so we are certainly taking that into consideration that perhaps it's coming down. But in the next year, it doesn't appear to make any financial sense to buy in LA.
That WSJ article has a good comparison on renting versus buying a 1 mil house in an over valued market like LA.
Also, keep in mind that my car expenses are largely deductable because I actually drive the Turbo (or whatever comes next) to the clients everyday.
