My husband recently replaced his S60 T5 (which I never told you all about because I was too embarrased to admit he'd bought one) with a new Touareg!

I'm sorry but I couldn't STAND that Volvo. I seriously fell asleep almost everytime I rode around in it. Mushy suspension, mushy brakes, horrible torque steer, blah. Luckily he bought it used as a CPO, so we were able to resell it with losing our asses. So much for practicality! Anywhoo...

As much as I hate to admit it, and being the SUV hater that I am... I LOVE the Touareg. It really is cool. Drives great, handles great, excellent power. And can tow a boat. Looks like a keeper.

Cool... My wife wants a Taureg to replace her MINI sometime in the next year...

Of that type of vehicle, I reluctantly admit I kind of like that one as well as the Volvo XC90. They are nicely styled and well thought out.

Too bad they are still way too heavy, have high centers of gravity, are risks to people in regular height vehicles, consume too much gas and lack manual transmissions. Otherwise I'd be all over one.

As far as weight... the Taureg is probably one of the worst -- it is truly a fat pig. I'm surprised they don't sell the V6 diesel in the US (Literally all the Tuareg's I've seen in Europe are V6 TDIs). I have seen one of the V10s at the grocery store near my house -- too bad those can't be sold anymore in the US.

But it is also a very good design. Considering that my wife works from home and therefore doesn't drive all that much, we might be able to put up with the absolutely horiffic gas mileage.

Just had to do it...

On another note, the X5 gets 16-18 MPG around town (depends how much I have my foot into it) and when I drove it to Hilton Head, SC a few weeks ago it got 24/25 MPG and that was moving at 85+ MPH.

If I were to get an SUV, it would be one of the following, probably in this order:

Forrester turbo
X5 3.0 5 speed
Infiniti FX
Touareg
XC90 V8

The Touareg is a very nice package, very slick inside, but it's HEAVY. I drove the V6, and it really struggles. I'd prefer something with a little more S and a little less U in my V.

I also drove the V6 Touareg, it was a total snail. I ran from the salesman after returning from the test drive.

Like a Tahoe, Yukon or Suburban or something.

If I wanted to get a car (like I consider all these crossovers to be) - I'd get a car.

I just don't get it (the draw these car's have).
Oh well. Won't be the first time.

Since I've had the 540 wagon (which I love except for the slushie), I've averaged 15.5mpg..:drinksol:.. I drive it like I used to drive the m3 though.

That's what we get in mixed driving with our 380 ft-lbs of torque Nissan V8. :p

THAT is a fun engine.

surprising that it does that well, but that motor is sleepwalking most of the time.

Well, if I was driving it it be in the range of 12-14. I always jackrabbit from red lights. Just a habit, a bad one @ that.

The newer X5's with the 6-speed are much better. The manual tranny gearing is really fucked up on the 5-speed, and the 6-speed is marginally better in gears 1-5 but a savior in that it actually has an overdrive 6th. 5th gear on the highway will drive you insane. In fact, you'll find that in a manual tranny X5 you always feel best driving the car one gear higher than you would in another car.... you could start off in 2nd where you normally would 1st, and so on...

what i don't udnerstand is why these softroaders weigh so darn much.

the fx35 is still hefty and it's the lightest in this group (except for the forester turbo) --~4200 pounds?

the x5 is 4600 pounds and the toureg is a ridiculous 5100 pounds.

4900? Must have been 2WD, and not the extended model?

Best of luck with that VW. I don't think Marisa and I will be buying another VW after our experience with her Jetta.

They are really well screwed together and have nice interiors, but the electronics (on a Jetta) are giving us fits. I can't imagine how bad the problems will be on a vehicle as electronically complicated as a Tor.. Twar.. Tar.. Toureg.

I'm too lazy to look. Isn't there as "regular" and "extended" ("XL") body style?

no, the suburban only comes in XL

you're thinking the GMC Yukon and Yukon Xl

Chevy Tahoe=GMC Yukon

Suburban = Yukon XL
