View Full Version : New S-class
Looks nice from the outside. A lot of CLS in the styling.
The interior, however...
Hideous. Very E65. :thumbdow:

The interior looks like an E65 with an MB steering wheel.

Its actually uglier than an e65... The double bump dash doesn't blend in at all...
Those fender flares look awful. Seems like something that would belong on some Chevy S-10 wannbe off-road pickup.
I can not believe that I am about to say this, but I like the E65 better. :?

Me too; at least the new, facelifted E65.

That doesn't even look like a Mercedes. Top pic looks like a stretched out Ford Focus, with some hints of Acura.
Kind of disappointing, considering how nicely the E-Class evolved.

Unfortunately it looks like a new design trend for MB -- the new M-class also has them. But at least the M-class is a pseudo truck...

Drove the new M-class yesterday at the M-Class road rally. What a horrible event for a whole list of reasons. Anyhow, the new ML is very nice in and out. Very impressive for an SUV. That 3.5L engine moved the SUV pretty quickly considering it weights almost 5000lbs.
I agree though, the fender flares do not work for the new S-class AT ALL. And the interior is just awful. It's a good thing I'll never consider that class of cars.

The new std. wheels though suck!

X3. I have seen the facelifted 7 in person. Not the most pretty car I can think of, but somehow I doubt the new S will be better.
European pedestrian impact standards are clearly spelling the end of good-looking European cars. That front-end styling in clearly driven by the need to keep the center front of the car tall. The Euro makes are all trying to incorporate it into their styling language and it's just not working. Audi developed it's mongo schnoz to work in the humped hood more gracefully (without success) and BMW has just distorted their hoods to accomodate it. Mercedes' approach here is probably a more graceful attempt than Audi's or BMW's, but you can still see how the center of the hood seems raised to a height it probably would not otherwise be.
The interior, on the other hand, is just a bad joke. It's a direct rip-off of the E65. And why anyone would rip off that rather than rip off Audi's A8 interior is beyond me.
Stupid.

Sad actually.
But then, I'm all in favor of spikes on the valve cover.
OMG. What have you done to the beautiful S-Class? I've liked every version from the 80s up through now. Jesus Crap. It's not just the high hood that bothers me. To me, the worst part is that the fender flares look like they came off of my Focus.
No way. I'd buy an E65 in a second.

It has fender lines from the RX8, the face from a Phaeton, and wheels from an Alpina. How creative.
At least the e65 was original (and I like the exterior of the pre-face lifted E65).

Wow, that is THE single worse incorperation of the NAV I have seen yet.

I like the Playstation controller integrated into the steering wheel.
Sigh. I'm far too young to be "old" when it comes to styling. I can only conclude that this interior is freaking nasty. Audi clearly continues its interior leadership, a position it has held for quite some time, if only by default.

At least they have their RPMs in units of one. Other Mercedes have RPMs in units of tens. :?

Speaking of the tach, I like how it's set so you can see the needle clearly when you are idling, but when revs build toward redline the indicator is obscured by the wheel.
Nice design, twits.

Your flaw in thinking: Assuming an S-Class owner will ever twist the tach that far in the vehicles lifetime.

True, but the valet parkmen deserve to see where redline is as they brake-torque donuts in the basement.

I don't think you can even adjust the steering wheel to see all of the gauges, from the looks of that pic. :speechle:
The only advantage it has over the E65 is that valets know how to turn the ignition on.

I like the current S series, this isn't an improvement

Definitely a big step back. M-B used to be a solid bet for a nicely styled, if conservative, automobile. With the new SLK and now this, I have to be a little more careful. They still produce some of the most beautiful cars in the world, but I'm a little worried about the future.

Agreed. The most troubling element is the interior.
But the all-new M-class looks good, an dteh R-class looks good for what it is. So there is a bit of hope. What I do not understand is why the departure on the ONE vehicle looked upon as the rich man's car in most of the planet? MB will definitely hear about this... BIG time.
Hopefully they will be smart enough to not let this filter down to the new C-class or E-class.
