If/when you have time. This will be the first time I'm doing a private party sale, so I'm trying to be extra careful. I started looking at 540 wagons this weekend. We went and drove one, and it is intriguiging. We're not in love with the white exterior, but it has most of the options we want (including nav, but missing heated seats and sun shades). It was a 2001, and the price seems negotiable and very fair.
The VIN for this car is: WBADR63461GN91630

I found two others that look interesting, but are a little further away, so if you don't mind I'd like some history and options info on them before I make the trek out to look at them.

WBADR6348YGN91333
WBADR634X1GN91906

Thanks in advance, and if you're too busy or can't run them for any reason, I understand.

Josh

Not a problem, I can help you out with these.

The system is currently down for some maintenance this morning and will be down again later this afternoon. If I can't get to it at some point today when it is working, I'll look them up tomorrow.

Thanks MUCH for running these.

Does anything jump out at you on the first two (the white one and orient one) in their maintenance/repair history codes?

and what does 0769 100% OPTIONS mean?

back in Austin I would often see a very well-kept 540iT in Alpine White and I always thought it looked fantastic!

"100% options" is a poorly named option code. Many people that don't know better take it to mean that their car is "loaded" (a.k.a. that is has every factory option, which they usually always DON'T)

What it DOES mean is that the car has all of the equipment necessary to make it a US-spec 540iAT. It has "100% options" in terms of what it should be standard on the US version of that model, but not 100% options in terms of all the available factory options.

Of the three cars, I think my preference would be 1, 3, 2. This is just going by the warranty history, though. The actual cars could tell very different stories. I really like the overall specs on the white one. I love white BMWs, and I think that they look especially good when they have the big wheels (which this one will have). I also like the Nav. It had the factory Full Maintenance extension to 50k, and it looks like they used it-- I see plenty of pit stops for scheduled maintenance items in the service file. The black one has the advantage of still being under warranty, which can be a huge asset. With about 9 months left on the warranty, you have plenty of time to fix all the bugs. Downsides are no Sport Package and no Nav. It also has a pretty decent warranty history. The Blue one has a few negatives-- it's older (the pre-'01 cars look outdated to me, ask others like TD and you might get different views), well out of warranty, and it has a very long (comparatively speaking) warranty history. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not exactly a good one either. It does have Sport and Heated Seats, though, which are both big in my book.

If the white one checks out, I'd go with that. It sounds like an awesome car if it is clean and everything checks out.

Hey, can you run bike VINs?

I still haven't gotten anyone to look at the F650 in Cinci, and now I'm also casting an eye on one in Joisey. Don't ask me why PNWers charge so fecking much for bikes.

No, we are currently only a BMW Car and SAV store, so I can only access those vehicles. I can't access Mini, BMW Motorcycles, or Rolls Royce.

Yes. :P Doesn't it have less cargo room and worse mileage? And I haven't heard towing metioned as a need....

It has better looks (to me), minimal difference in fuel mileage, minimal difference in cargo capacity, more rear seat room (especially in terms of width), better foul-weather capability (a plus in the Northeast), and it has better safety ratings (the 5er was an IIHS best pick, but the X5 was "the safest vehicle [they] ever tested")

Did I mention that it'll have better resale value, and it'll be much easier to find one that meets his specs.

Well, if you consider 14/18 vs. 17/21 "minimal"... even so:

http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/E-BMW-540iSportWagon-03.htm
http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/E-BMW-X5-03.htm

 Not terrific on either, but far worse on the X5 4.4.

I've driven an E39 528iT auto (track school) and an X5 4.4 (friend's tow vehicle), and would far rather have the former, if I had to choose.

Of course, I'm not buying it. But bringing up a few things to consider.

Check out the emissions scores. Only the 3.0 are even comparable to the 540 wagon. They still suck on the 4.4s.

I really care about the air we breathe - and for some reason, those with children who will be breathing it in the future seem to care about it much less. :dunno:

Shouldn't that be "pwned?"

Y'all and your descendents will be the ones 'owned.'
Me too, of course.

Sometimes I wonder if that would be such a bad thing. Looking around - we really have made a royal mess of things. Sometimes I think that instead of pushing for conservation, I should do the opposite - push for dirtier vehicles, fewer restrictions; take away the requirements for cats, bring back leaded gas, bring toluene to the pumps. That would be a quick way to kill ourselves off, if done right - and maybe, in the long run, that wouldn't be such a bad thing. Sometimes I wonder if, in aggregate, we do more good than harm by being here. And sometimes, I don't wonder.

You would be evil for recommending the x5, :flipoff: we drove one a couple of years back and hated it. The 540 has more room, is better looking (in my opinion), better gas mileage, better ride, a lower CoG and is more sporty (for the twins ;) ), and the x5's better resale value is actually a drawback for me (higher purchase price).

We've worked out what i think is a VERY good deal for the white wagon. As you saw, it's an '01 with Nav and 58,000 miles. Right now we're at $25,500 with snow tires on aluminum rims. The person I'm buying the car from is taking delivery of a new x5 in early July. We're trying to work with his dealer to take the 540 as a trade in (so he saves on sales tax) then immediately swing it to me for a couple of hundred more (I'll finance it through the dealer to make him happy). If this works I'll be picking it up for just under $25k, which is a fantastic price in my opinion. I'm having the car looked at by my mechanic next monday, so I'll know for sure that everything is OK before I buy it.

Now all I have to do is sell the M3...

Thanks again for your help with the VINs and such. :grouphug:

Wow great price. What a good find. I hope it all works out.

On the topic of the convertible, I was looking through the local auto trader and I swear this must be THE summer to sell these cars. There were no less the eight on them back to back on one page for sale. I do live in an area where they are quite abundant though. :P
